Will my 15 week old catch DC1s chicken pox? Did yours?

Hi

DC1 has severe chicken pox, and DC2 who is 15 weeks has been with DC1 all the time (lockdown).

I’ve read that under three months are unlikely to catch them but just wondered what the reality is. DC2 wasn’t breast feed due to a number of reasons.

I need to brace myself and prepare mentally!

Thanks x

The incubation period between my dsis dc was 18 days

DD1 was 2 and a half when she got chicken pox. DD2 was 7 months but still being breast fed and many said she wouldn't get it. 3 weeks later she developed a few spots- not many at all- she had it very lightly but she still caught it.

Funnily enough, my FB memories this morning had a picture of DD2 covered in chickenpox. She was 12 weeks old and we had hoped she either wouldn't get it or would have a mild dose. She had loads more spots than her sister, who she caught it from, but was less sick, IYKWIM.

Thanks everyone. I guess lockdown is a good a time as any to get it! 🤦‍♀️

Well DC2 has caught it, EXACTLY two weeks after DC1. Lots of spots poor kid but so far no fever 🤞 x

I hope she isn't too poorly with it Flowers

Undervaluedandsad · 11/04/2020 07:33

My 6 week old did but a very mild version. She has never caught it again so I think has immunity.

Gettingonabitnow · 11/04/2020 07:37

Thanks. I hope it is mild, she seems totally fine at the moment, although it seems to be a lot on her scalp and ears at the moment which must feel awful x

Uhh she’s covered. There literally isn’t an inch on her scalp that doesn’t have a blister. She feeding and we are giving calpol back to back. Given her age she should she see anyone? She’s being a real trooper bless her.

I breast fed mine and that seemed to provide a level of comfort. I don’t remember giving her calpol.

Two weeks to the day between my two children, as well. Miserable time, but I’m glad it’s out of the way, three years on!

Gettingonabitnow · 13/04/2020 02:10

Thanks. I’m so worried about her, her head is 90% covered. 111 doctor advised as long as she’s hydrated etc just plough on, but it just looks so severe I don’t know whether I should push for someone to just review her x

DS got it from DD when he has 5 months old (DD was 3.5) - they both had it very mildly. I was frankly glad they got it over with while I was on mat leave!

Haworthia · 13/04/2020 15:30

The second child always seems to get it worse. I think it’s because the first child catches it from fleeting contact with an infected child, whereas the second child is literally in constant contact with their infected sibling, they get high exposure for days Sad

Don’t be afraid to get her seen by an OOH doctor. Paediatric doctors have been very concerned that parents are delaying seeking help until their child is really sick, for fear of catching COVID 19.

Remember 111 can’t see her and see how badly she’s covered.

Gettingonabitnow · 13/04/2020 18:58

Thanks. She got seen by a video link today and is now on antibiotics, the gp confirmed it’s a severe case. I think she may end up getting admitted as she there is barely an inch on her not with a blister.

Sad I hate chicken pox, when my second child was real poorly with it, it was such a miserable week. Take care OP.

Gettingonabitnow · 14/04/2020 03:28

Thanks, she’s now spiked a fever for the first time, hard to know if it’s just the virus running it’s course x
