hi

My ds is 2yrs old and has a small wooden set but we are looking at getting him some of the diecast Thomas trains etc. We are not sure whether to go for the "Take along" sets or the "Motor and Rail" stuff. Which would you recommend and are they interchangable?

thanks

It's the ones with red paint that were recalled (due to lead in the paint).

We have the takealong wooden ones and DS (2 next week) LOVES them. They are also easy to get hold of (& therefore to replace), don't hurt too much if thrown. There is just something about the wooden ones that I like- maybe it's just nostalgia, I don't know...

My boys are nearly 4 and we have both. I would definately go for the wooden. The take along is smaller, more fiddly and the new track design not good really.

You could add to what you've got with say a bridge or Thomas building it will be compatable. As regards the wooden trains I've heard that once they have a battery one they don't use the push along anymore. Pick carefully as you will want a battery one later(my boys do now) but we already have all the battery ones but without batteries if you see what I mean so had to get a Brio one as didn't want 2 of the same character. Brio do lovely battery ones by the way -the big red locomotive. They also do a lovely pushalong that glows.

We have the most ridiculously large Tomy set.

I am going to sell it on EBay and get the wooden stuff which is much better imo.

We have both a wooden set and a Take-along set. We love both tbh. The Take-along track is fiddly and ds2 (3) needs us to set it up for him every time, but he plays with it for hours on end and he loves the die-cast trains more than the plain wooden ones and takes them out with him to play with no tracks.

He also plays with the wooden one though (currently set-up at Granny's), and at least can make some sort of track himself, but usually needs a hand to get the ends to meet etc. He's happy to play with with the wooden trains, it's just that he loves the Thomas characters and the take-along ones are miles cheaper than Thomas wooden ones.
