Worth having reusable nappies for one child only

Hi,
I want to go for reusable nappies for my 7 week old DD but i wont be having any more kids. Looking at the economies, is it wpeth going for it. I do want to do it for the environment impact of it, but want to understand if it will save any money as the initial cost of it is very high. I don't want to go for used nappies and the people selling on ebay all mark it as new and mention it is stained n bought preloved etc.. I have joined the nappy lady fb group .. but would prefer to buy new.
From the blogs n videos i have seen I will need 25-30 nappies. So approximately 300£+.

Also with the liners do they get very heavy and huge for the baby? I have got the tester pack from tots bots and even with smallest fitting it will be big for my LO as she has a thin waist. Any advise..

Also i use pampers atmo and with every poo there is a leakage. I wonder if this is happening with disposables what will be the case with reusable.. more leakageConfused..

And washing the dirty nappy with other clothes, even after removing the poo seems , seems strange... does the smell not go into other clothes?

You can start with only a few. Every time you use a reusable, you save cost and nappy from landfill.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 02/04/2020 09:06

I’m using them for dd2 (definitely Baby The Last) and didn’t for dd1.

I like them, and got them all second hand through ebay or from our council’s offer for a free set (to free up bin space - check your refuse website to see if your council do this). I think i only have approx 10-15 and that seems fine. I probably spent about £45 total.

I use a disposable for night time after a couple of days of nappy rash, but reusables all day. Dd2 is 4 months and 75th centile so have no advice on the too-small thing, but poos don’t escape any more than disposables and the papery liner means it mostly all lifts off the nappy. As long as you remember to do a wash every day/every other day, they’ve turned out to be a godsend - especially in these days of empty shelves and limited shopping trips Grin

I did, bought them all second hand (obviously not so easy right now) then sold them on afterwards. Probably made back almost as much as I spent in the first place! Don’t bulk buy all one brand as different ones work for different babies, I had to play around with them a bit before I found ones that worked well for us but never had a single leak, even in the ones that didn’t fit so well!

If you are going reusable I just had a referral code through from cheeky wipes which will give you 15% off (I prefer them cotton wool and baby wipes) cheekywipes.refr.cc/S6GKC59

Definitley with it as even though you want new, plenty of people will buy second hand, so you can sell on once your done. You can get away with 20 if you're washing every other day. They do make baby bulkier so I'd suggest vest extenders and stay away from slim fitting trousers. Disposables are a nightmare for poo leaking, they drive me crazy. Never had a poo leak in a resuable although I get the odd wee leak when I've not changed soon enough.

Buyitinbamboo · 02/04/2020 12:21

Also I dont wash with other clothes but you can, just milk poo dissolves in the water so you can just chuck them in. Once you start weaning you need to scrap some of the poo off

Thanks everyone for the great advise. I am sold.. Smile.
So i have bought two second hand bambino mio solo, few alva and am ordering some terry towels. I have the starter kit from tots bots and i have used the peanut wrap with the nappy and two extra liners and its a bit big in size but we will see how we get on maybe next time will put only one liner.
I will buy wraps and nappy nippas (any recommendations) i will check on fb groups as well.
I had contacted our nearest nappy library as well but they are unable to fulfil orders at the moment.
Seems daft but i couldn't find all in twos. I will need to check again some you tube videos and see what they are called and maybe try one or two.

Please could you wise mumsnet suggest what is a better longer- bamboo, charcoal, microfibre, hemp or fleece.

Also the Little Lamb bamboo/ cotton / microfibre nappies similar to the terry towels in regards to absorption?

And last question do u necessarily need a lided bucket for this or a large wet bag can do the job.

Thanks in advance.

@AGoodDay- She is in size 2 nappies atmo but i tried the Pocket nappy from tots bots and that fitted her well.
@Loopyloopy- yes i am stepping carefully into this world but everytime i use a reusable nappy i feel good for saving earth a little bit more.Grin
@RubaiyatOfAnyone- i contacted the council but i thibk they won't respond till after the lockdown. The voucher is worth 25 pounds so approximatelt one nappy.

@MysteryFrog Yes the plan is too try a few brands first then look out for the second hand options on fb.

@Buyitinbamboo- thanks i am planning to have 15-20 of them n wash every other day if possible or increase tge stash once i know what suits the baby best. Ta.

Nappy bucket, not sure what everyone else recommends but I had one of those tommee tippee nappy bins for my daughter which I kept and I now use for my sons reusable nappies. I threw the lid away as discovered it smells less with no lid

AGoodDay · 06/04/2020 19:19

If you go for the wet bag you might want two so you can wash that too. We have abucket but a bag sounds like a great idea - easier to keep mobile babies out of.

Fleece is used as a liner and doesn't absorb anything. Or you can use disposable bamboo (paper) liners. Liners are the bit that goes next to babies bum, and can be part of the nappy (miosolo and I think alva) but you can double up if you want - sorry if you know that but your post was a bit confusing.

Microfibre nappies/inserts absorb most quickly but least amount, charcoal the most amount but least quickly, bamboo is inbetween. Cotton absorbs a lot and quickly but it's bulky. I think I've got that the right way round, but I'm prepared to be corrected. It depends on if your baby d oes a few big wees or lots of little ones as to which suits better.

JunoJigglewick · 06/04/2020 19:27

Not read the full thread, sorry.

But search on Facebook for preloved selling pages for the different types of nappies. Definitely worth getting second hand. Don't worry about stains or marks - wash them all when you buy them, dry them inside out in the sun and they will be bleached white again.

I bought a few new and had a huge bundle 3rd hand. Totally worth it.

ShopoholicIn · 06/04/2020 22:34

@Buyitinbamboo I have a tommee tippee nappy bin as well.. will use that thanks.

@AGoodDay thanks for explaining. So i have the tot bots disposable liners. I had ordered some alva microfibre and charcoal liners only to discover later that Alva ones are not good (fb nappy lady group info.. should have checked earlier). Anyways I will try them once they arrive and order from a different company. My DD does lot of small wees.

@JunoJigglewick thanks. I have joined a few of them . Just got 2 preloved nappies and on a look out for more thanks again.

@Cherry85 yeah we spend about €20 a month on nappies (and that includes wipes). Once they are out of the newborn period and don't poo 100909877 times a day you can get away with 2-3 nappies per day and 1 overnight. And you don't need to buy Pampers, the own brand ones are just as good. Stock up when you see offers - job done :)
