Reusable night nappies for 4 year olds ?

I have 4 year old twins - showing no signs of being dry at night. We used to use reusables but ditched them at night ages ago because they were soaking through them. I went on to disposables because I naively thought they would be out of nappies soon (going by DS1 who was dry at 3 !).

I have finally got sick of using disposables and gone back to cloth - but am having similar problems with leaks.

I really don't want to buy a whole new load of nappies - I have got couple of new fleece wraps. I am using terry squares - one as a nappy and one folded as a booster. Some nights it works - others the sheet below is totally soaked.

What else can I use ? I saw something about microfibre cloths - are they the ecloths ? I have some of them - are they worth trying as a booster?

Any other suggestions ?

you can use micro fibre cloths, tesco do cheap micro fibre cleaning cloths. You may find it just as effective to get a couple of large fuzzi bunz inserts to add into your nappies. You could get them second hand.

off to google fuzzi bunz inserts ! It is amazing how much things have changed in 6 years (I bough most of my nappies for DS1 and then reused for ds 2/3 - fuzzi bunz, hemp, bamboo, microfibre etc didn't exist then I don't think).

motherease bed wetter pants. comein three sizes. i think we have the middle size. used with ds1 who was dry by 5.5 and currently being used by ds2 who, at 6.3 shows no signs of becoming dry. they dont soak throug.

i did buy five years ago, so may have changed since then. but these are perfectly well made.

how do the bedwetter pants work ? My boys seem to be big wetters and can easily soak two terry squares in one night !

they have huge amounts of towelling in them. something like six or eight layers i think? huge. ds2 hates wearing them. but they dont leak, and that's what i care about.
as a six year old, he does big wee's, which is why i think they would work for y ou

Poundland do massive microfibre cloths.

evilreturns · 10/09/2007 12:34

maybe try PUL wraps? while fleece is fab for letting bums breathe ( at that image), something like a rikki would keep all the wetness in and keep sheets dry...

throckenholt · 10/09/2007 13:00

I was trying to be a cheapskate and not buy anything more. I had one fleece wrap that seemed to work - so bought another couple - and they leak .

Will maybe try with the micro fibre cloths I have, and then if that doesn't work either get some more PUL wraps or try the bedwetter pants.

I bet if I do they will decide to be dry the next night !

actually they are annoying little blighters - we tried without nappies over the summer - they both managed it averaging 1 night in 3 I guess - but the novelty wore off and they went back to wet every night .

Oh poor you. I don't have any real experience of this but recently ordered an easy peasy bumper for ds2 (2) It was huge and I sent it back but it would be great for a 4 year old. They have a pocket to stuff extra into so would be fairly absorbant. Need a wrap though.

throckenholt · 10/09/2007 13:13

it is just another one of those parent things I am not very good at. I get annoyed having to put nappies on every night (I have lost the knack of terries !) and get wound up with wet sheets in the morning.

I try not to make an issue of it most of the time - but when I am tired (usually at their bedtime) I tend to lose my halo !

I have decided to go back to nappies until they are dry (and ignore my mum's comments !) - I really would like them not to leak though (and preferably without having to spend any more money ).

Shame there is no magic answer (eg - ah - you just use x, works perfectly, costs nothing !).

I'm onto minki yo-yos which seem to be good

superalienstitch · 10/09/2007 21:17

throcken, i bought these for 17 pounds each. used them with two dc. i feel i have definitly got my moneys worth from them. even though ds2 hates them with a passion, he still has to use them occasionally.

We use happy heiny stuffable pants for our walloping great 3 year old - they aren't cheap (about £10 each?), but I've never known one leak - & there's a wide size range (I assumed I'd need XL for ds when I bought them last year, but the lady I bought them from said 'You won't - XL fit ME! )

We manage with 3 - you could always re-sell on eBay when the twins are dry at night?

juuule · 10/09/2007 21:59

I'm still using cotton Tots Bots with Tots Bots wraps (all size 3). My dd is 4y3m. Only had a problem with leaks when I've not made sure that the wrap was on properly otherwise no problems even though some mornings the nappy is soaking when I take it off.

throckenholt · 20/09/2007 07:18

just an update - I have finally found a successful combination (from the stuff I had at home so that I don't have to spend may more money). Fleece wrap, terry sqaure, and 2 folded and strategically placed e cloths. We have not had a leak for a few days now

stress levels slowly decreasing
