Self-Isolation potty training support

Well now that we officially in isolation for the next 14 days I thought it might be time to toilet train DS. He's 2 (just). He does sometimes ask to use the toilet already, but rarely.

Any tips? Anyone else doing the same?

So it started well but after about a week now he is still having lots of accidents, maybe more than at the start. Any suggestions??

How are you training - is he wearing clothes/ pants/ a pull up?

Naked on the bottom, except nappy overnight.

It's like he could do it at the beginning because it was exciting and now the novelty has worn off...

Try instructing him to wee. You May have a rough idea of how long he goes between wees/ how long after a drink he goes. Try:
“Ok so we’ve had breakfast, time for a wee”
“Ok so we are going to wee and then go in the garden”

Sit him in the potty with an iPad if seemingly holding his wee.

Fractionated · 27/03/2020 12:38

Thank you, I will try letting him take the iPad in there. He would like that.

I try to get him to try regularly but he absolutely refuses and has a tantrum if we try to insist or make it a routine. He enjoys it when he does manage to go on his own and he gets lots of praise, and a reward if he does a poo. But even this doesn't seem to work now. Today he went to try, got lots of praise for trying (didn't do anything) then minutes later did both in the sofa!

Maybe he's just not ready.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/03/2020 13:06

How does he react when he wees or poos himself?

I would be careful about regressing, I know it’s so hard but it can send mixed messages making it harder next time. It’s hard to imagine but it does click eventually.

Hmm ok. We will persist. He doesn't seem too bothered when he has an accident. We have tried to follow the oh crap type response just calmly saying "oh you've had an accident" - not shaming him but not saying don't worry either. He knows he should be doing it on the potty but isn't distressed that he's not done that.

DivGirl · 27/03/2020 18:12

Can he hop on to the toilet himself? I've got a toddler seat with steps attached and he seems to prefer going now that he can do it all himself.

Actually OP has a good point- a friend of mines son really took to the toilet never the potty

Fractionated · 28/03/2020 07:32

Yes sorry I should have said - we have one of those and he does use it! Prefers it to potty marginally

We have started another sticker chart so will see how that goes

DivGirl · 28/03/2020 07:58

I've also had some luck with "mummy's going to the big big toilet" and he usually follows me through and then I have to cross my legs while he decides actually he does need

So I’m thinking about starting to potty train my boy whilst we are in lockdown but he’s not 2 until May. Am I crazy even attempting it?
