Which car seat? 360 or travel system compatible?

Expecting my first baby in June and I'm looking into car seats. Would we be best opting for one that rotates 360 or one that will fit onto the pram? It seems there aren't many that do both. We haven't got the pram yet but thinking of going for the Oyster 3. Thank you!

Id go for a travel system one to start with, that fits on the pram, for the first size. It just makes life easier when going places, baby goes straight from car to pram frame, no unbuckling or bringing extra seats etc

Travel system x

We got both. Travel system compatible "bucket seat" and then a 360 Britax swivel one that did from 3 months. I didn't intend to get the isofix base for the bucket seat but my work colleagues got us amazon vouchers for my mat leave present and so we were able to buy it with that. The isofix base now lives in DH's car, so we effectively have a carseat for each car.

The bucket seat is very portable and can be belted into any car, whereas the 360 ones are massive units and it's not a quick job moving them. If you intend to have family looking after baby with any regularity or rely on the occasional taxi or lift, it's really convenient having the bucket seat. Joie do some very reasonably priced ones which are compatible with the Oyster 3. If you're not due til June I would get one of those and then wait for a sale/Black Friday to get the 360, which is roughly when you might be happy moving on from the newborn bucket seat anyway.

We had a travel system one until DD was 10 months then switched to Joie 360. They're fab.

LittleLadysMama · 18/03/2020 06:56

I'd say both too. Been using the 360 one since my LO was 3.5 months but used the travel system one first for convenience and to be honest, it was more expensive to buy our pram without the car seat than it was to buy the whole system 🤷‍♀️ not sure how that works for Oyster but worth checking as that might make decision for you. Wouldnt be without the 360 now though!

Seaglasss · 18/03/2020 07:04

We went with a joie 360, it's not really suitable for moving between cars regularly so bear that in mind.
Never bothered with a travel system compatible one as whenever we used the pram it was for long walks and the guidance is not to leave them in a carseat for too long so I didn't see the point!

Horehound · 18/03/2020 07:05

Yup we have a travel system but are now gone move to a 360

MindyStClaire · 18/03/2020 07:23

We've had both too. The one from the travel system until she was just under a year and then the Joie 360 spin.

I liked being able to get her sorted in the seat in the house when she was small, and then bring her out to the car. Also useful to put the seat on the buggy base if we were just going for a quick trip to the shops or driving to a baby class.

However definitely get one that spins whenever you go up to the next size whether from birth or later. Game changer.

Thatbloodybear · 18/03/2020 07:27

As above I had the Oyster with the maxi cosi car seat option, dd used it for ages as she was tiny, then moved to the 360.
Dc2 is now in the travel system and will inherit the 360 soon as dc1 moves up to the next stage.
Absolutely worth every penny IMO.

Travel system then move to one that rear faces until 25kg - I like axkid minikid. (look up extended rear facing and internal decapitation)

Another vote for travel system for as long as they fit (DS was 18 months and that was by height rather than weight) Then invest in a 25kg Swedish Plus Tested seat, which should last till around 6 (compared to 4 for an 18kg seat like the swivel ones)

AxKid Move is same as the Minikid but without the bells and whistles and fewer recline options. Get the Minikid is it's to be swapped between seats though - if both cars have a set of tether straps in it's a five minute job.

FairfaxAikman · 18/03/2020 08:02
  • if it's to be moved between cars
Soontobe60 · 18/03/2020 08:05

I look after my grandson one day a week. He had a travel system seat from birth which is easy to get in and out of the car, then I bought the Joie 360 at about 6 months, which stays in the car. I'd say you'd be better with both.
My DD had one 360 between her and her DH, but it scratched their cars to buggery repeatedly swapping between cars so they ended up buying one for each car.

Sundaygirlz · 18/03/2020 09:36

We've got the Oyster 3 pram with the Cybex cloud z, not the cheapest car seat but the isofix base fits this seat and the next size up.

Sundaygirlz · 18/03/2020 09:53

I should say as well the cloud z actually lays out flat when put on the pram so you don't have to worry about the baby being in it for too long!

We had a joie ilevel for 6 months that went on the pram then a joie ispin 360. Both great seats While they are young it's easier to have travel system seat to get in and out of car without disturbing them.

Abouttimemum · 18/03/2020 11:00

Travel system for the first year, we’ve just switched from the maxi cosi pebble to the new maxi cosi 360 now he’s 1 and doesn’t really sleep in the car any more.
The car seat that you can pop on the pram is really handy when they nod off and you have jobs to do without disturbing them.
I absolutely love this new 360 though, so much easier getting him in and out of the car ha.
