Any cloth nappies experts in the house?

As there may be supply challenges coming up for disposables if everyone continues to panic buy, and there's even the possibility that we'll be isolated for two weeks at some point (and I don't like the environmental impact either), I'm looking into cloth nappies. I'm thinking it'll be one less thing to worry about buying and I know I'll have the time to wash them as we won't be going anywhere.

I've read lots of reviews and comparison articles but I'm still not sure where to start. Can anyone recommend a brand for my needs? I like the look of little lamb (littlelambnappies.com/collections/littlelamb-nappy-kits), but would like to hear your experience?

I'm looking for a nappy kit which is:

  • suitable for a 2 month old up
  • ones that can completely replace the disposable, so ones that are suitable for day and night (thighs for overnight stays is probably use disposable, but I can't see that happening for a while)
  • this is my last baby (probably) so a one size fits all would be best, but I would compromise on this for quality and absorbency
  • great absorbency and minimal leaking
  • preferably not seriously expensive
  • our washing machine is on frequently anyway as I already have an active 3 year old
  • I found I get on well with cheeky wipes

And how many do you need?!

I don't really get the all in one vs two part nappies, are the latter generally better for absorbency?

Thank you Smile

You could try birth to potty Alva Baby nappies. I got mine from TJ's online. They're a little more reasonable than, say, Bambino Mio when bought new. They're popper fastening and adjustable. You can choose the liners, I've got charcoal, and we put in microfibre boosters too at night for extra absorbency.
We do use Bambino Mio as well, I have some I got from Ebay. But I prefer the Alva Baby.

I used pop in. They were brilliant from 8weeks to potty training. They are easy as you treat them as whole things as in they pop together and you wash them all popped, you can open them out to dry.
They dry fast - I used bamboo ones at night.
I had about 24 nappies I total. Cheeky Wipes were brilliant, washed with the nappies.
It was expensive but they went through three of my four kids- was a bit nervous to use with the first baby, not sure why Smile

I would go for pop ins as well. You can boost them at night. Double gusset helps contain leaks. You can often buy them 2nd hand but I'd make sure you get the 2nd generation bamboo ones, as bamboo more absorbent.

We hot Juicy Bumbles ones purely as a back up and found them to be good. They also have good reviews on Amazon.

I did have to buy extra bamboo inserts though as the starter pack only came with six.

They are pocket nappies but I just put the liner on top and change that as needed.

You will need at least 25 with a 2 month old.

I'm using cloth nappies for my 3 month old dd. I have different ones for day and night. I also like flat ones that you can fold, fasten with a nappy nippa and put a cover over. Completely customisable fit.

I have bought mostly birth to potty for my dd and the adjustments make it fit fine :)

My favourite all-in-one nappies are;

Bumgenius elemental organic
Blueberry simplex
Charlie banana

At night I use a two part system so fabric nappy with wrap over the top. We use

Motherease sandys or
Tots Bots bamboozle stretch

I usually use Tots bots peanut wraps because the fit on my dd is very good.

The best flats (imo)
Fruit of the womb
Osocozy

I tend to also use fleece liners because my baby has sensitive skin.

I'm not an expert but will answer based on my experience.
Firstly check if there's a "nappy library" in your area. They will be able to offer advice and may have kits for loan.

All in one vs two part nappies: yes two part are more absorbent. Almost everyone uses two parters at night as all in ones aren't absorbent enough.
For little lamb, that would be these nappies: littlelambnappies.com/products/bamboo-nappy-pack-of-5?variant=18145954398277&currency=GBP&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6sHzBRCbARIsAF8FMpX94TTInu1pk0_3c9yRkbsNrRWoB28Lo3oim0ADxdqpupVeqmIPisYaAnQPEALw_wcB plus a waterproof outer wrap like this: littlelambnappies.com/products/wraps

Other brands like totsbots have similar ("bamboozles" plus wraps)

The 2 parters will probably hold the wee from 2-3 feeds but it's nicer to change them every 2-3 hours really to avoid nappy rash. And change after every poo.

I find that they take about a day-day and half to dry indoors without a tumble dryer.

You'll probably have enough to wash every other day.

So you'd need about 15 minimum to use them all the time.

They aren't cheap as initial outlay but there are lots of people selling them second hand. Try the Facebook groups "cloth nappies for sale/wanted uk" and "the nappy lady buying & selling group".

Good luck!

I’m not sure how busy their website will be but the nappy lady advice questionnaire is worth doing. Usually get a response in 48 hours, your not committed to buying and can speak about alternatives if you don’t like the suggestions. We use milovia microfleece pocket day time and totsbots bamboozle with blueberry Capri wraps night time. The totsbots are chunkier so although you can use them for day we made the choice not to

If you are on Facebook the UK Cloth Nappy Libraries have a page and a chat group which you may find helpful www.facebook.com/groups/197471257685221/

I used cloth on my 3 12 + years ago but used the nappy lady then and found her excellent.

I used to have some all in one's as easier for going out (fuzzibunz or wahm ones) but I found a Terry or bamboo nappy (like tots bots or little lamb with a motherease popper wrap worked best. One of my DC was big and chunky, one teeny and one vv tall and incredibly skinny and these worked for all three

onedream · 17/03/2020 11:20

Something like Tots bots peenut system can work for you and saves money as you can reuse wraps..basically you will have wraps and inserts to put in, at nappy change as long as wrap is clean you can reuse wrap and just change insert..for night tots bots does bamboozle nappy and again you use same type of wrap you already using during the day..pack of liners to keep bum dry and you are good to go..and you can make one order from one place..I don't use this system but I'm sure if you get in touch with tots bots they will be able to advise you how many you need..
Alternatively already mentioned pop in nappies are good..

Tittie · 17/03/2020 11:23

This is all really helpful, and had has given me a few more brands that I hadn't come across too. Thank you everyone for the recommendations and advice Smile

I think the biggest challenge may be getting dh on board!
