How to get medicine into an 8 month?

My dd is 8 months old, been the dr today and they've given her antibiotics.

I squirted a little in her mouth and she full on projectile vomited, half hour later tried putting it in yogurt. No luck she sniffed it out. So I waited another half hour. Tried putting it in her mouth again, little taste, projectile vomited again.

She needs medicine but clearly there is a problem, she has took an antibiotic for her chest infection not long ago, didnt like it but took it, shes had calpol, ibuprofen.

But this different antibiotic she HATES.

Shall I go back the dr in the morn for a different one? I cant keep making her sick. She needs the medicine, really bad flare up with the skin that they think is infected.

Is this normal for some kids to do this even though she never has, is it just not suitable?.

By the way its amoxicillin that she has now, never had it before, been googling and seems a common problem with the stuff.

It's not uncommon, the antibiotics children are given taste awful even though they are supposed to be strawberry or cherry flavoured (I remember gagging over them).

Mix into her food a little at a time, making sure the food has a stronger flavour than the medicine.

It's good that she takes Calpol, I remember mine always vomited after Calpol even though had no trouble swallowing it, it was a waste of time.

Honestly I put a Tiny bit on the chocolate yogurt and she knew. Never seen her react like this. The last antibiotics she didnt like but took it. I will let her stomach settle and try again in a couple of hours with a stronger flavour

Give them a tiny bit of warm milk in the bottle with it in. I say tiny as I've done too much before and they didn't finish so didn't work but just enough so you know they'll drink it all

tallah · 16/03/2020 14:35

Missed that you've tried it but still if it's really really small about she will have swallowed before she realises

Nammech111 · 16/03/2020 14:37

@tallah cows milk or her baby milk? Any? I will give it a go

My doc prescribed something called Augmentin (?)when my baby had weepy eczema. She was worried the usual kind of antibiotic would be unpalatable so she prescribed this one which apparently is still vile, just less so. We managed with a syringe and sneaking it in baby's mouth before taking a mouthful of food. Could you ask for an alternative that tastes better?

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 16/03/2020 14:39

It's not nice but my 8 month old has had tonsillitis 3 times.
The most important part to me now is completing the course in it's entirety.

So I pick her up. Lay her back with her arms pinned, hold her head in the crook of my arm, get the syringe into her mouth and put it at the back of her cheek and just syringe slowly.
She screams, chokes and is genuinely miserable. But at least it stops the infection.

Nammech111 · 16/03/2020 14:43

@blitzen they are unsure of what's going on, said it could be weepy eczema thats infected, they thought chicken pox but no temperature, then impetigo but still not convinced.

Then asked if we had cats. I said I visit partner parents with cats and they think it could be allergic reaction.

I feel so stressed I have no answer. But I understand they are trying.

@itsallthedramaMickiloveit no problem getting it in. Keeping it down is the problem lol.

Whatever she usually has. Worth a try. Good luck

We used to feed DS a bottle of milk and I would hold the bottle, and DH would slowly but surely squeeze calpol in the edge of babies mouth whilst baby was drinking milk

uhoh2020 · 16/03/2020 21:39

Add it too a yogurt and give it that way

Sleepycat91 · 16/03/2020 22:41

Uhh i had to give my boy this last year and he was 5 at the time. I couldnt work out why he was making a fuss till i licked the syringe myself and that stuff is absolutely FOUL. Tastes like shit, im not surprised kids wont take it. Had to bribe him with polos straight after. Can you give it to her asleep? Cant say that worked for us though, he spat it out everywhere😖

Bringonspring · 16/03/2020 22:45

Have you asked if it comes as suppository? My daughter would do something similar with calpol so we got paracetamol as a suppository (it’s very mainland Europe). Honestly I have no idea why we try and syringe medicine into babies in the UK

Cherry85 · 17/03/2020 07:47

We got a medicine dummy and they are amazing! They suck the dummy and swallow it before they even realise what's happening!!

TamingToddler · 17/03/2020 07:51

If you blow on her face when she has it in her mouth it'll make her swallow. No idea why but it worked for my son!

schnubbins · 17/03/2020 07:58

Use a syringe and hold her nose.Reflex is then to swallow .Sounds cruel but it does work.

20viona · 17/03/2020 08:04

I manage to syringe it in her mouth down into the lower buccal sulcus (as if you're aiming for the back lower teeth) and that's works.

modgepodge · 17/03/2020 19:30

We’ve only ever got calpol in by mixing with say an ounce of milk. I have heard of people just putting it in the teat of a bottle, they sick before they realise what it is. Both only work if bottle feeding of course.

Blowing in my child’s face seems to work for getting vitamin drops in. Mostly.

Nammech111 · 17/03/2020 19:58

I've been the dr and changed the medicine. She just would not keep it down. Projectile vomit everytime.
The new antibiotic she isnt keen on but keeping it down thank god!.

Thanks for all your tips I'm going to be trying some over the next couple of days
