Keeping child off nursery? Confused!

It’s possible I’m overreacting here.

DD is 21 months and developed a cough yesterday, it’s got worse today. She’s currently trying to nap on me and is coughing in her sleep.

She doesn’t have a temperature.

Nursery are saying it’s fine for her to come in as she doesn’t have a temp, however the NHS advice seems to be if a cough develops to stay at home for 7 days.

Having spoken to both my work and nursery the plan is to send her in tomorrow as normal.

Just wondering what everyone else is doing in this situation?

If she is coughing a lot I think nursery would be very tiring for her and if she's ill make her feel worse.

Keep her home for 7 days. The advice is very clear. It doesn’t matter if nursery think she is ok to go in - government guidelines are to self isolate for 7 days if you develop a cough OR a temp.

I have a similar situation (child with a new cough but no temperature) and am keeping my child at home for seven days. Follow the government advice and not the nursery.

The government's advice trumps the nursery's. I'm quite concerned the nursery have said that. Send them the link to the NHS page.

It’s a cough OR temperature. She shouldn’t be going to nursery and their staff need educating!

RhymingRabbit3 · 16/03/2020 14:22

I would keep her off nursery even if it wasnt for Covid. No fun for her to be in nursery when shes ill :(

Phifedean123 · 16/03/2020 14:23

My nursery said the same about my two year old who started having a little cough yesterday. That he was fine to come in. Had to pick him up at 12 today as he now has a temp (38) absolutely kicking myself and feeling awful as I was debating with myself over it all morning. We are in isolation for a week now. Dad's just gone out to get us more bits. Keep her off definitely.

Pentium85 · 16/03/2020 14:27

Do not send your child in.

Your nursery is incredibly bad for saying to send them in and I would be worried they have allowed other children to attend who are poorly.

Why people are so incapable of following very simple government advice is beyond me

RainbowsandSnowdrops · 16/03/2020 14:27

It was the manager I spoke to and she said she was following advice.

I’m annoyed for doubting myself now. I spoke to my boss and she said she’d sent her daughter in with a cough to her nursery too.

Well I have no idea what advice she is following because it certainly isn’t the advice given by the NHS...

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-people-with-confirmed-or-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

The advice clearly states cough OR fever. Keep her home for 7 days and forward the government advice to your employer and nursery asking them why they think they are exempt

*The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of:

new continuous cough and/or
high temperature
For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild infection

if you have symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), however mild, do not leave your home for 7 days from when your symptoms started.*

I've just picked my DD up (13months) as she had a temp of 37.6. They aren't giving calpol any more either and she is banned for 7 days. Now she's home and had calpol she seems fine but I understand why they are being cautious. Hope your little one is ok

OhLook · 16/03/2020 14:36

They aren't being cautious, they're following the government advice.

JJPC · 16/03/2020 14:38

It’s really irresponsible of the nursery to take her against the government advice.

Mummabear219 · 18/03/2020 20:35

I wouldn't send her in, the government advice clearly states that if you have a new cough or temperature to isolate yourself & your family members too. I think your boss is incredibly selfish for sending her child into nursery when the child has a new cough. What happens her or your child has COVID-19, then you're both going to spread it to everyone else at both nurseries. Please l just keep your child home!
