Does shouting TOILET whilst weeing count as progress?!

Started toilet training last Sunday with DD1 (2.3yrs). After lots of accidents I now catch most of the wees and poos by a combination of reading the signs and pure athletiscism on my part! She understands what is expected and is keen to do it but she obviously can't hold it in long enough to reach the potty/toilet so just shouts toilet while it dribbles down her leg. Will she learn to do this if I keep trying? Probably I've started too early but if she goes back in nappies will I just confuse her more? All suggestions gratefully received!

Bumping for you, because this sounds very similar to what my ds is doing and I need some advice as to what to do next.

Good Luck!

That does sound like some progress, but if you think it's too early, don't worry about putting her back in nappies and trying again in a few months.

I tried to toilet train ds1 when he was 2.3 and it was a nightmare. After 2 weeks I gave up and left it for 6 months (I was pregnant at the time and didn't want to be doing it around the time the new baby was due). The second time it was much easier. I've said it before, I think it's a switch rather than a gradual process. Good luck.

Lol, I toilet trained my DD over a month ago when she was just 2 and the first week she was the same. She understood that she was supposed to go on the potty as she put her doll on it, and clapped and kissed the doll after it had "weed", so it was probably a question of recognising the impulse a few instances before it was actually coming out. She clicked in the 2nd week and by the 3rd could wee to order.

Just persevere - hard I know - but you will get there in the end. Having said that, if she hadn't got it after the 2nd week I might have given up.

Thanks for swift replies, it's reassuring to hear that other children have done similar things and then got the hang of it. She is so excited by her "big girl knickers" that I don't want to go back to nappies but equally don't want to stress her out if she can't physically manage it. On the plus side, our wooden floors have never been so clean!

I'd definitely keep going if I were you. I used to carry the potty round the house with me when I was training dd (also about 2.3 btw) and give constant reminders so she learns to go before she's absolutely bursting. Sounds like she's well on the way - and when you've got no carpets its not such disaster if she has an accident. Good luck.
