Nappy sticking to newborn’s bum

My baby is a week old and some of his (poo) nappies have been sticking to his bum.

I’ve been gently peeling them off with damp cotton wool or a wipe and trying to make sure he is properly dry with cotton wool or a soft towel before putting a fresh nappy on. The cotton wool leaves traces behind which I’m trying to remove.

His bum doesn’t look sore so I’m uneasy about starting with Vaseline or cream because I’ve heard that creates a constant need to use it / the skin becomes dependent, a bit like lip balm.

Does anyone have any advice please?

We had this with pampers (even though we changed frequently and used barrier cream) and ended up with a very sore bottom. We changed to eco by naty and kit and kin nappies and haven’t had this happen again

Ah thank you. This has been happening with pampers. We started with eco by natty and found we had a lot of wee leakage but that might have been because they were too big. I’ll get some smaller ones.

We had quite a lot of leakage with eco - we are getting in much better with kit and Kin

Congratulations on your new little one! We’re 11weeks in with ours now

Yep stop using Pampers. We switched between eco disposable and sainsbury's depending on dd's shape at the time.

Only sore with pampers here. Now using reusables and fine.

Olive oil or sunflower oil is good at getting first sticky poos off - trick learnt from neonatal staff!

Thank you all! I wasn’t sure about pampers but they were the only ones we could find locally in a size 0. The NCT lady told us that size 0 would be too small so we stocked up on size 1s and have needed to get whatever we could find. Poor baby 😢

Aldi sells size 0 - I found out after getting a sample at a Mother and Baby show when my LO was 5 days old.

So do Asda and Boots.

One thing I would advise if any nappy (or wipe) causes a problem even if it is a brand name try something else. Different nappies will suit your baby better as he grows.
