The 45 minute intruder!!!!

As the title may suggest, we're having a turbulent time with sleep cycles. My 13 week old boy slept from 11.30pm to 6am from he was 7 weeks old. We just got lucky I guess, he loves routine!! He was diagnosed with silent reflux at 5 weeks, but it's well controlled with thickened formula and low dose omeprazole. He naps well during the day (usually in his cot in his nursery). At night he sleeps in a bedside crib in our bedroom and two weeks ago he began crying out in his sleep. It took us 3 or 4 nights to realise he wasnt actually waking, but at the very minimum every 45 minutes (sometimes every 10 to 15!) he screams out in his sleep. The moans sound so distressed, and he's thrashing about in the cosleeper, arms and legs flailing, rocking his head from side to side and arching his back. He can sometimes be settled with a gentle shush pat. Other times we have to lift him and this wakes him.

We've winded him (no use). We've upped his feeds in the day slightly. We've ruled out hunger as he'll surely take anything we offer him at 3am but he'll then refuse his 7am feed. We have looked at heating coming on in case he's cold, light coming into the room in case it's disturbing him, DH has moved rooms in case it was his snoring...nothing has helped. I had high hopes at the end of last week that it was the dreaded reflux returning (back arching, super fussy on bottles during the day, grizzly) so the omeprazole was increased slightly and split into twice daily dosing...to no avail thus far.

Can anyone suggest anything silly we've missed? Maybe it's just developmental and it'll pass. I'm back to work next week and I'm not sure how I'll function with the frequent night "wakings". All advice appreciated greatly!!

Has anyone discussed the possibility of CMPA?

Bronte38 · 11/03/2020 19:37

Thanks for input! Nobody has gone that road, nor even hinted at it. I assumed CMPA would involve an obvious skin allergy but maybe not?

Definitely not. I have CMPA and that’s why I suggested it. There are two types, ige and non-ige. People who are non-ige like me rarely have eczema with the allergy. Have a read of this from Allergy UK and see if any of it sounds familiar Smile

JJJ, thank you for signposting me to such a comprehensive website! I've had a good read and it's possible he could be suffering with this. I'll take this further with my GP, but I can always get my hands on a tin of Neocate and give it a go if all else fails. At this stage, it couldn't do much harm!!

If you go down that route, I'd maybe start with Nutramigen...Neocate is seriously vile!

Oooh thanks SP. I wouldn't have realised until it was too late 🤢😂
