Orange stains in front of 14mo nappy

My 14 month old boy has had diarrhoea since Saturday and has not been eating and drinking as usual.

Today I noticed some orange stains in the front of his nappy. Is this from the dehydration? I’m trying to bf as often as possible as he won’t drink water or diarolyte no matter how much I try. He just gets upset when I offer them to him.

I’m hoping to go to the GP walk in session at 4pm today. I just don’t know what else to do.

Went to the GP surgery today and saw the practice nurse (GP busy). PN said the orange stains were most likely faeces stains which I disagreed with as his stools at the moment are beige green coloured. Also, it’s too high up the front to be stools. She gave me urine and stool sample pots.

Any ideas if these orange stains are normal?? I’ve seen stuff on dr google about brick dust in dehydrated babies but I got the impression this was in new borns only.

hi it could be dehydration or it could be from blood in his urine (which can indicate a kidney issue). Was his urine brownish or yellow? If it was brownish it could be blood in his urine.

Sounds like it us as you suspect 'brick dust' or as the PP @Jossina put it, urate crystals. Sounds like it's related to the dehydration and that you're trying your best to get the fluids in. Keep your eye on it and return to GP if necessary.

I know this is an old post so I hope you see this! I have been searching everywhere trying to find a post from someone who has experienced this with a baby over 1! My 16 month old just had this in a couple of nappies the other day and has had on two other occasions following illnesses! Did you get any more information or advice on this? My PHN only ever heard of this in newborns. Really concerned want to get ultrasound or bloods done. TIA

Hi @Becca234 my DS’ urine sample was normal and he was totally ok after a few weeks and is an energetic 3.5 year old! In retrospect, I think he had covid as this happened right around the time of the pandemic and he may have been dehydrated.

Please take your little one to your doctor to discuss your concerns and make sure they stay hydrated. Hopefully they will be ok. Best of luck!
