Hey!

So I'm due my baby in 7 weeks and I'm getting all worried and over thinking everything!

After seeing a post on social media regarding the super-steam advanced steriliser by tommee tippee making a newborn ill because it wasn't sterilising properly, cutting the cycles short.
Has anyone got this steriliser and actually has any good reviews about it? Please help me put my mind to ease!

I already purchased this from mothercare before they closed, starting to wish I wasn't so organised and bout it early from there! Certainly wish i checkout the reviews before I bought! I just didn't expect this from a brand like tommee tippee 😟
I did do a test cycle and timed it the other day after reading the post and it ran a cycle for 7 minutes so obviously it worked for me however this was only 1 cycle! Oh I'm so stressed about it!

If you're that concerned sell it, donate it or bin it and buy a different one.

I’m not sure how you could ever prove a baby became ill specifically from a bottle not being sterilised in a steriliser correctly. It’s more likely the formula was not prepared correctly.. or that the parents didn’t follow the sterilising instructions properly. Please don’t believe everything on social media as gospel. It’s often just a parents opinion and sensationalised. Clearly, any electrical product can break.. these parents were perhaps ab unlucky example of the timer going a bit wrong. You could get it with any brand. But honestly, how you’d not notice if it hadn’t sterilised for very long I do not know. So long as your bottles are coming out red hot, it’s fine. It takes about 30 seconds of exposure to boiling temps to kill any lingering bacteria!

Sterilisers are very simple, they get boiling hot and steam the bottles, thus killing the bacteria. They are all much of a like. You need to have thoroughly washed the bottles first. You need to not overfill the steriliser. The lid needs to be securely on.

We used that steriliser for a year with no issues at all. It’s back out for baby no.2.

If not happy, get a new one but don’t just believe everything from one social media post. Look at the overall reviews.

@bol87 thank you for your reply! I know I should know better than to believe social media 🙈 I blame my hormones lol!

Your right I need to remember things can go wrong with any device and as long as we are following everything correcting and monitoring the steriliser I'm sure we will be fine! Just needed that little bit of reassurance as a FTM thank you!

People are always more likely to blame something or someone else than look where they may have gone wrong. Sad fact of life. So try not to be anxious.

As long as you follow the advice and instructions on how to use equipment and do your best you'll be fine. You won't be able to protect your baby from everything but you can minimalise risk by doing the best you can.

chickennuggets2 · 11/03/2020 19:01

@fishbaby, thank you! I'm just going to try and chill out a bit and definitely stay away from social media stories! Your so right I wont be able to protect baby from everything, hopefully il be the best mum I can be to baby! You and previous poster definitely eased my anxiety! Thank you!

It might of been my post on social media?! I know I can’t guarantee it was the steriliser but she was fine (I have always followed the instructions correctly and measured formula correctly) it was only for two weeks she was constantly throwing up the doctors went through everything and it wasn’t until an off chance that I remained in the kitchen that I noticed it turning off after 30 seconds instead of the 5 minutes it is supposed to. Meaning that it wasn’t getting to boiling and not sterilising and the reason they are almost certain it was the steriliser was because the instant I used the spare steriliser she stopped being sick. There were many people who had noticed the same thing but also many that haven’t had any problems. Up until that point it was a fantastic steriliser Tommie Tippie are replacing them steriliser and if I use it I will wait in the kitchen until the cycle has finished to make sure it has finished. Technology breaks I wouldn’t let it put you off it I just would be careful

crazychemist · 13/03/2020 06:15

Your baby isn’t here yet, so test your steriliser!

Put some empty bottles in, fill it and switch it on. Come back in 4 mins. It should be very hot and there should be lots of steam in it and some escaping. If there’s little steam, it’s not working so don’t use it. If there’s lots of steam, it’s doing it’s job. As @Bol87 says, it kills bacteria with steam, so providing you’ve got several minutes of lovely hot steam, it’s working.

DivGirl · 13/03/2020 06:40

If it makes you feel more comfortable in some countries (France being one) there is no recommendation to sterilise baby bottles of equipment. It's sad that this particular baby became ill but I don't think we can put all of the blame on the steriliser. It's more likely the bottles weren't cleaned before going in, or as a PP said the formula wasn't made up according to instructions.

Stop googling baby equipment, you'll find horror stories about everything and they rarely tell the full story.

NickyLou8 · 13/03/2020 06:51

The bottles were fully cleaned and the formula made up right! You guys are great at making me feel like a bad mum I already feel guilty for not realising the steriliser wasn’t working! I wasn’t trying to scare people and I am sorry that this has made you anxious OP the point of it was to show not to completely trust technology because it can break.

NickyLou8 · 13/03/2020 06:57

I apologise OP I just seen the post I think you mean on social media? About the meningitis baby? I can totally understand why that has made you scared I thought you had seen mine from a few weeks ago and couldn’t understand because it was just a friendly warning to keep an eye on it. Please accept my apologies and like I said before it was a brilliant steriliser before it broke just don’t become too trusting like me (I feel really bad) and keep an eye on it :)

chickennuggets2 · 13/03/2020 07:27

@Nickylou8 I'm not sure which post it was I think the baby was a couple days old or something? At first when I read it I was kind of like any equipment can be faulty but then I went into the comments and seen that everyone was also saying there's was doing the same!
Glad you got your little girl better and a new steriliser sorted 😁

@crazychemist I did just that the other and it made me feel so much better about it! It worked completely fine so I was stressing for nothing 🙈 going to do as Nicky said and just make sure I'm about when it's on.

@divgirl I didn't know that! Yeah I think your right, got to look outside the box sometimes and consider other possibilities!

Thanks guys!
