Blocked duct advice

Have discovered a painful lump in my boob this afternoon which I definitely think is a blocked milk duct! I've tried putting a warm cloth on it then massaged and emptied with a feed and a pump once my baby finished feeding but I can still feel the blocked lump Confused
Has anyone experienced this and know what else I can do to help it go as I am worried it will develop into mastitis! Shock

When I get this it is because I have a milk blister on my nipple that stops the milk from coming out and it won't clear until I've popped the blister.

Yes I've also had the blister - also known as a bleb. It is a white spot on your nipple.

If it's a bleb you can soak it first and let baby feed on it often they are best at clearing them

Electric toothbrush! Hold the back of the brush against the lump (through clothing) and let it do the work. If you do this plus hot shower/massage and massage towards the nipple
It should be gone within 24 hours, try not to worry.

BumpLoading · 09/03/2020 20:13

It's not on the nipple its inside the boob if that makes sense? However I've never heard of a bleb!

I had a bleb when feeding my twins, popped it with a needle

Had a blocked duct this time round with no bleb, hot as you can shower and massage the lump

BumpLoading · 09/03/2020 20:14

I have an electric toothbrush what a great idea! I'll try that then and hope it's gone tomorrow Blush

I had lumps from blocked ducts when I was wearing my son off of feeding. I would get into a hot shower and slowly massage and squeeze the lumps till milk came out (sounds like a niche porno 😂). They don't go straight away but keep up the gentle release and it does help.

sakura06 · 09/03/2020 20:26

Electric toothbrush sounds great!

When this happened to me, I used warm flannel and a fine comb and combed the lump towards the nipple. Feeding the baby at different angles can help clear it too.

minipie · 09/03/2020 20:29

Get in a deep hot bath or shower and keep massaging the lump and around the lump really strongly (it will be sore) until it starts to loosen and then keep on till it’s all gone.

LimpLettice · 09/03/2020 20:33

What @sakura06 said! Hot shower and comb with firm but not painful pressure towards the nipple. And feed the baby in lots of positions so their nose is always at a different point on the breast.

I had one that never cleared and had to be drawn out with a needle, a galactocele I think it was called. They can be nasty if allowed to fester so keep an eye and GP if you can't clear it at home.

midwestspring · 09/03/2020 20:53

I also used the comb method.

BumpLoading · 09/03/2020 21:34

I've tried an electric toothbrush in a hot shower and theres still a lump but will try again in the morning with a comb... I'm hoping itll magically disappear over night during night feeds!

Try dangle feeding, It's the least glamorous thing ever but I found it pretty successful in clearing blocked ducts. That and digging out the odd bleb, very satisfying when you find one.

KMoKMo · 09/03/2020 21:53

Another vote for dangle feeding. I found it almost impossible to do but worked wonders when I got it right. Put baby’s chin under the blockage if you can.

minipie · 09/03/2020 22:18

I never found a comb helped, just had to dig my thumb right into the lump (ouch)

Beetie1 · 09/03/2020 22:39

Best thing I found was hot bath followed by DP doing the massaging. He could get a better angle on it then me. Also angling baby so they are feeding with chin towards the blockage and pressing into it whilst they feed. The feeling when it goes is so relieving!

Nightmanagerfan · 10/03/2020 08:57

Has it gone today OP?

BumpLoading · 10/03/2020 09:23

Hasn't gone yet no, but will try dangle feeding and position his chin on the lump next time I feed.

I'll keep trying to massage it but it grosses me out a bit touching it Blush

I had a blocked duct - it ended up affecting the top third of the breast and was really painful. A night of cluster feeding exclusively on that side did nothing, but running a hot shower over it while pressing down firmly eventually did the trick and I had a fountain! It was a horrible feeling, tender and burning.

Ilovechocolate01 · 10/03/2020 10:02

Hot shower - point the nozzle at the lump, bend over (gravity) and massage from back to front. I also used a body puff to massage. Have you got a breast pump? I found it easier to massage back to front when pumping without a baby in the way. If it doesn't shift in a day or two then go to GP mastitis can start very quickly

BumpLoading · 10/03/2020 10:14

Yes I have pump I'll massage while pumping then and try the hot shower again, I'm a bit wimpy and probably need to massage a bit harder as would hate for it to develop into mastitis!

I found I had to be VERY firm when massaging a blocked duct, to the point of it almost hurting. I had a bleb on my nipple which was causing the blockage inside the boob.
I did as everyone else has suggested: hot shower, expressing (by hand), dangle feeding, massage (very firm).

Hope it feels better soon Flowers

Jessie9323 · 10/03/2020 12:21

Second the very firm massage, almost till it hurts!
