How much milk should a one year old have a day?

Hi all. DD will be one next week and is formula fed. The amount of milk she has a day varies (some days she’ll have loads of food but hardly any milk, and other days she’ll have loads of milk but will only pick at food), but on average I’d say she has between 16-25oz of milk in 24 hours as well as three meals and snacks. She doesn’t have a feed at night anymore.

She’s quite big but in proportion (on the 85th percentile for height and 80th for weight). Just wondering if there’s a limit on the amount of milk a toddler should have in a day!

Thanks Smile

Around 300/350mls is recommended from 1 year so 10-12oz.

Aim to give your toddler about 16oz each day – if she won't drink this amount, try to give other dairy foods such as yogurt, milk on cereals, cheese, custards and sauces to make up for it. Of course, there is some transition time, after all, most babies at 10-11 months old are drinking between 24-30 oz of milk a day. The switch shouldn’t happen over night. But, once she does reach her first birthday, it’s important to start being aware of how much milk she’s drinking and begin to focus more on food. Milk is still VERY important for development, it’s just no longer the star of the show.
The other big change that occurs about this time is that you should start to serve milk with a meal. This too, is a transition and does take some time. Drinking milk during a meal is so important because if they are drinking milk in between, they never really have a chance to get hungry, and if they don’t have a chance to get hungry, they aren’t going to eat well. This can lead to picky eaters very quickly.

I wouldn’t be replacing milk with food at this age. She’s not overweight, she’s gaining weight well, just keep things going

NHS info:

Try to give your child at least 350ml (12oz) of milk a day, or 2 servings of foods made from milk, such as cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais.

Semi-skimmed milk can be introduced from the age of 2, provided your child is a good eater and growing well for their age.

Skimmed or 1% fat milk doesn't contain enough fat, so isn't recommended for children under 5. You can use them in cooking from the age of 1, though.

You can give your child unsweetened calcium-fortified milk alternatives, such as soya, almond and oat drinks, from the age of 1 as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Toddlers and young children under the age of 5 shouldn't have rice drinks because of the levels of arsenic they contain.

Perhaps a silly question, but is it better to give more? I think DD gets about that (350ml) in milk to drink a day, plus more in cereal, cheese, yogurt etc. So I am unsure if I should cut out her morning cup of milk.

As long as doesnt affect her appetite for solid foods then I wouldn't worry too much if they're a bit over

Mine has a cup in the morning with breakfast and a cup in the evening before bed, I’d say about 12oz total. Plus sometimes milk in cereal, and he eats cheese/yoghurt etc.
