Giving baby girl Soy milk

Missnana · 07/03/2020 23:06

My 11 month baby is lactose intolerant and I've tried Almond, hazel, soy ,and rice. She doesn't like any except vanilla soy. Just when I thought I had a milk to help wean her off breastfeeding, I heard from various people that soy milk was very bad as it had hormones in it and it could affect my daughter in the future. Could give her ovarian cyst or fibroid, which I have in my family. What do you wonderful mothers think? Her Ped said Soy was okay tho 🥺

Fortified Oat Milk is what the pediatrician recommended my DN who were LI. But they’re boys. I think soy is fine for a girl

I gave my CMPA baby oat milk as that seemed to be the most recommended option, followed by soya.

Just found an oat milk. I will try that and see how she takes it. Thank you all for suggestions 🙏🙏

I have given my daughter alpro growing up milk since 12 months and she loves it! It also has all the added vitamins needed for a toddler 😊

Missnana · 08/03/2020 21:03

That is exactly what I got. Alpro Oat milk. I really hope my baby loves it. It will help with the weaning off breastfeeding.

I dont think oat milk has enough protein/calories for that age group. Rice milk isnt suitable under age 5 due to arsenic.

Alpro soya 1+ is fortified for children over 1 year and I think that's what a PP was talking about.

dementedpixie · 08/03/2020 21:11

If she is lactose intolerant she wouldn't be able to breastfeed as breastmilk is full of lactose. Are you sure they arent intolerant to cows milk protein rather than lactose which is the sugar in milk

user1471468296 · 08/03/2020 21:11

Oatly Barista is 3% fat so better than many oat milks and closer (though not as fatty) as whole milk.

Missnana · 08/03/2020 22:01

@dementedpixie I think you are right. She is allergic to the protein in cows milk cos she is breastfed. Also I heard and read that the fortified soy milk is still not the best as it can carry hormones in them. Really confused now

Are you in the UK? Soy based formula is not advised in the UK. It doesn't contain hormones as such but has some ingredients which are of concern for potentially causing hormone related issues. However other countries don't necessarily advise this, and I have a feeling that even in the UK it's considered OK when they are a bit older, so if you are elsewhere this night be why your paediatrician says it is fine. I would probably want to look into it and see what the research says. I also wouldn't want to be feeding a vanilla flavoured milk as this is likely to contain a lot of sugar and be bad for her teeth. This is a problem with a lot of 12m+ formulas as they aren't really regulated at all.

You don't have to of course but you could also carry on breastfeeding and then she doesn't need to drink any other source of milk.

dementedpixie · 08/03/2020 22:08

I thought soya is more of an issue with boys. Also more of an issue when milk makes up a larger proportion of food intake. After the age of 1 less milk is required.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 08/03/2020 22:09

Rice milk not advised for under 5s

dementedpixie · 08/03/2020 22:10

It's not formula that is being suggested. Alpro 1+ is a fortified soya milk rather than formula and is found with other regular soya milk. Other non dairy substitutes often arent recommended before age 2

LemonScentedStickyBat · 08/03/2020 22:11

Sorry, didn’t see that had been said already- just wanted to add it for any one reading who is unaware - don’t think it’s well known

BertieBotts · 08/03/2020 22:13

Yes, I know the milks being recommended aren't formula milk, but the UK advice about soy specifically refers to soy formula, I just thought I would add the warning about 12m+ formula being sweetened in case OP was unaware. Many people assume it is a healthier option than ordinary milk as it is fortified, but if it's also sweetened it can cause massive dental issues if little ones are going to bed with a bottle or drinking a lot of it.

OneHanded · 08/03/2020 22:13

Alpro growing up milk is a soya milk specifically balanced for growing infants.

Chouxalacreme · 08/03/2020 22:47

Be very careful and calculate vitamins and minerals
My son was on oat milk due to soya and dairy non Ige allergy and has damaged teeth due to not enough calcium

Missnana · 09/03/2020 20:29

Update::: I gave my baby Girl 120 ml of oat milk this evening and she guzzled it all up. Hopefully this isn't a one day thing. But thank you all for the suggestions. I will also keep everyone updated. 🙏

At that age she should still be having only breastmilk as the main drink. It's too soon to be giving alternative drinks.

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 20:38

Also keep in mind oat milk is low in fat and protein

Missnana · 09/03/2020 21:48

@dimentedpixie I still breastfeed her btw. Is he is 11 months now and I want her to get used to something else besides the breastMilk so when I transition her, it will be easier. But thank you for the concern n advice 🙏
