Red flags in soon to be 12 month old?

Hi,

Hoping i’m just being overly anxious here as I’ve suffered with anxiety since DS was born. He’s almost 12 months old and is happy, lots of smiles, good eye contact and babbles loads. Rarely says mama (But has done) Says dada and baba regularly, makes lots of sounds and mimics some actions that I do. He claps hands and has done for a couple of months but he doesn’t wave, he also rarely points, but he will reach out for something if he wants it.

My concern is that he doesn’t wave at all and he rarely points. He does usually respond to his name, but yesterday he had a settling in session at nursery and when I collected him he was sitting on his key worker’s knee playing with something. I shouted him twice and he didn’t look up. No response. It just didn’t sit right with me. Shouldn’t he have responded after not seeing me for an hour and being in a strange environment?

Today, i’ve tried to get his attention by calling his name multiple different times throughout the day. Sometimes he will look around at me and smile, other times he’ll ignore me. Is this a red flag? Same with the no waving?

Also, when laying him down to change his nappy he will flap. Same when he wakes from a nap in his crib and I come in to the room. It’s like he’s excited, but looking online it seems flapping can be a red flag?

He does not sound like he's on the spectrum. He's probably concentrating on something else when you call his name? My 13 month old is not really pointing but he does wave and follows lots of other 1 word instructions. Don't worry mama, he's fine xxx

I would get his hearing tested and keep lookout for any possible asd signs but mostly I would try to stop worrying and enjoy him.

Even if he is autistic, it honestly is not the end of the world.

FWIW my son has v severe non verbal asd plus a huge developmental delay, but at 12 months this was not stall noticable, I would never have guessed!
He is fucking amazing and I love him so much.

My DS is one next month, doesn’t wave, point, clap, crawl or stand. Doesn’t give two shits when I’m not there, or when I arrive back. You’d think his dad had been gone for a decade even if he pops to the shop though, shakes with excitement every time he sees him 🙄😂

How’s your LO getting on @VillageFete? X

Pissinthepottyplease · 16/08/2021 20:12

DD2 never waved but she was 6 months old when we went into locked down so never saw anybody or went anywhere to wave good bye and she never pointed because she walked early and was a climber so just went a got it. She is two now and meeting all her milestones.

Definitely ask for referral for a hearing test.

VillageFete · 17/08/2021 09:12

@rachelrainbow Hi, well he is 28 months now and seems to be doing fine.

We had a hearing test, he passed, but they said he had fluid in his ears. They rebooked to see him in 6 months which will be October this year. He’s also been referred to ENT as he has massive tonsils and mouth breaths a lot due to this. I want them gone!

2 year check was fine, he passed. He talks but not in proper sentences, says maybe 3 words together, sometimes 4 words. Points, waves etc etc… The waving did come a bit later though, pointing started at 15 months.

He’s certainly not “advanced” but he seems to be doing fine. I still worry all of the time, but that’s just me Shock

He started a new nursery as the previous one was a bit ridiculous, only ever focused on negatives and expected far too much of such young toddlers. The new nursery (He’s only been there for 2 weeks) Say he seems to be doing great and they have no concerns so far x

Hi @VillageFete hows your little one getting on?

VillageFete · 05/07/2024 13:29

@Mumof3bb1 Oh he’s fabulous! He’s 5 now, thriving in Reception class. Funny, sociable, inquisitive, popular, intelligent (Although lacks common sense!) And just utterly brilliant.

He was a slow starter, but you’d never know now!

@VillageFete aww this is amazing, I love reading positive outcomes.

DS turns 10 months on the 13th he’s pretty quiet on the babbling front no real mama/dada etc but has learnt how to crawl and pull to stand the past 2 weeks, so hoping it’s just cuz he’s mastering those skills.

Still no waving, pointing or clapping but can bang 2 objects together and then they go straight into his mouth, still no teeth too🙈

it’s just a constant worry.

VillageFete · 05/07/2024 14:04

@Mumof3bb1 It is a constant worry, I know. I now have a 7 month old baby girl and the worry is just as intense. I feel like milestones are rammed down our throat and SO MUCH is expected of babies and toddlers.

Your boy sounds completely where he should be! And I imagine the lack of babbling absolutely is because he’s focusing on other things.

I tell you what I do recommend- Bare Biology Omega 3 for kids. That gave my son a boost. Also a decent multivit that contains folate (Not folic acid) Once they are over 1. Baba West is a brand that springs to mind.

@VillageFete oh amazing, do you think these vitamins really help, I’ll look into them.
