Newborn not pooping?

Hi

I am a new parent to a 1 week old baby. When he was first born I tried to breastfeed the first couple feeds but didn’t like it and changed to formula milk (Cow and Gate) then later found out he had a slight tongue tie.

My Mum bought in bulk a few packs of the Cow and Gate ready milk from birth milk so me and my partner have been using that until we got comfortable. We were actually gonna start the powder off today with him.

He has his milk warmed up. At first we were following the guidelines and giving him how much it said on the box and only feeding him every 4 hours, but once the midwife came for his check up on day 5 she said to up his milk to 120ml and let him drink as much as he wants and to go whenever he is hungry (which now seems to be every 3 and a half hours but only drinks around 90ml)

The last time he pooped was 48 hours ago now. Yesterday he was trumping a lot, and did look like he was straining for a poop. But he doesn’t seem to be in any pain or distress, he feeds really well and goes to sleep really well too. He had the odd cry we don’t know what for but he settles really quick once comforted.

Any advice or recommendations?? Thanks in advance

Megan x

A newborn should poop MUCH more than that,

I would call your delivery suite and tell them
Exactly what you have put here. They will want to see him.
I am shocked your midwife didn't ask about his pooping at their day 3/5 visit.

When my baby was constipated they said they weren't worried about no poop until it had been 2 weeks!! I thought it was far too long to not be concerned but that was what was said to me only last year. Therefore hopefully that puts your mind at ease. Your baby's only a week old, so ring your midwife or health visitor for advice. If you think little one is in pain or constipated you can try lying them on their back and moving the legs in a bicycle movement. This helps "massage" out any blockages! Worked with my newborn, just be prepared for a very runny nappy! :)

Get off MN and call your health visitor or midwife. I was told to expect no poop for up to 10 days. It's a normal occurance. I ust can't remember why.

I would contact your midwifery team today and leave a message to let them know as a precautionary measure. Try massaging his tummy and cycling his legs to get his bowels moving.

This is very common and I wouldn't worry but I would let your midwife know. She may suggest some cooled boiled water, but I wouldn't introduce that without their specific instructions on such a little baby.

I just thought I’d ask for advice here as well as I have already text my midwife thank you.

How has he been pooing this week? Has he moved to having the yellow poos before now?

When my DS2 was about 7 weeks he didn't poo for well over a week and I was told it was fine. He was bf though so I'm not sure if that makes a difference to the advice.

Ps in my area the midwives pick up messages as they arrive and then go out the office, so I would phone now and leave a voicemail rather than waiting ....

Megan1995 · 07/03/2020 06:49

Yes they were yellow and quite reasonable sized poops

My midwife and I have always messaged out of hours. I was going to wait till it weren’t so early morning to ring it she hadn’t replied..

If you haven’t already done it would ring the hospital now. Don’t wait.

It’s fine for breast feed babies to go up to 10 days but that’s only for breast feed babies and after 6 weeks.

The midwives said that they weren’t concerned and if it had been a week they would of been worried. I ended up massaging his bum with a warm cotton pad and it came right out, and he’s pooped since.

Thanks for your help everyone xx
