Milk question

Sorry if this sounds stupid ..
My 19 month old daughter usually has a 9oz bottle of formula in morning and 9oz at night to go to sleep.
Tonight I realised we had ran out (car is broken ) and I couldn't get any.
I gave her warm cows milk in her bottle and she actually drank the whole thing and went to sleep basically straight after! So my question is do I just get rid of the formula now and not buy again? Or is it still important for them at this age to drink it?
Also does cows milk have a tendency to make you sleepy and sleep better?
If formula is still needed at this age I will buy some tomorrow (first child so sorry if this sounds ridiculous ) thank you anyone

Personally I've always lived o net o cows milk from 12 months they don't need formula past that ... it's much much cheaper to use normal blue milk

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 06/03/2020 22:40

Babies don’t need formula after the age of one. It’s a money making scam by formula companies. Just use blue milk.

dementedpixie · 06/03/2020 22:41

I gave mine cows milk from 1 year. They only need around 350mls from 1 year

Thank you for replying
I did think it would save money😂but felt bad as I know she likes her bottle still. But it's as if she didn't even notice or care so I'm sure if I can switch I should whilst she's accepting it

Assuming she's eating a varied diet, and ideally having a vitamin supplement (advised by the NHS for under 5's), cows milk is fine - formula is fortified with vitamins and minerals.

chardonayforme · 06/03/2020 22:42

Ah ok I didn't know that! Luckily I kept her on 6-12 and didn't move on to 1-2! I'll give her cows milk from now on then! Great😊😊

Normal milk is fine - if you want added vitamins try alpro soya growing up milk as it has added vitamin d and other vitamins.

I also think you may be giving too much milk overall and could consider dropping the morning feed. Does your child have an otherwise healthy appetite?

chardonayforme · 06/03/2020 22:43

She doesn't have vitamin supplements no, are they tablets or something?

Definitely go ahead and switch, then you can start phasing out the bottles (the recommendation is for both formula and bottles to be phased out at 12 months). The milk in her cereal, yoghurt, cheese, etc will no doubt be enough, but if not, then a small cup of milk will be enough. 18oz a day is too much really as it will stop her from taking in as much from other food groups. (I know the sleep thing is hard but better to do it sooner than later!)

dementedpixie · 06/03/2020 22:45

Its normally liquid supplements for that age. Its advised to supplement vitamins A,C and D up until age 5

chardonayforme · 06/03/2020 22:46

@SocksForceFive yeah that sounds good as I don't give her vitamin supplements?
She eats vegetables at dinner with fish , meats etc and recently I cut sugar out quite a bit!
Breakfast shell have things with high fibre or eggs or weetabix? Lunch sandwiches salad tomatoes etc?

OP posts:
elephantskiss · 06/03/2020 22:47

There are lots of vitamin liquids and drops - Nature's Aid, Abidec, Haliborange, own brands, etc.

chardonayforme · 06/03/2020 22:49

If
I cut the morning bottle completely will giving her just 9oz before bed be ok? If I give her different drinks in the day?
I will buy some vitamin supplements then!
I think I recall my HV mentioning it months ago is it like a brown dark liquid? it said to not give it your child if they were having 2 or more bottles of formula a day so I didn't! Messed up there Blush

If vitamin drops are recommended a lot as you all say then I will defiantly buy some tomorrow when I can get to the local pharmacy Feel a bit silly I've not given them to her before and have switched her milk this late Confused

elephantskiss · 06/03/2020 22:57

Don't feel silly - you didn't know, but you're taking advice on board now you do. Nothing wrong with that!

Honestly, my DD wasn't even having 9oz by that age. I stopped bottles by 13 months. Just a small cup plus milk in cereal/yoghurt/cheese is plenty. Water is the main drink they should be having. After 2-2.5ish I didn't bother with the cup either as the HV said she had enough from other sources and I agreed when I saw her chart with what portion sizes were needed for each food type. You can definitely get rid of the morning one and start cutting the evening one down until it's just a cup of milk with dinner.

PixieDustt · 06/03/2020 23:19

You said you cut out sugar but be careful of the milk also because that's not great for teeth especially if she isn't brushing her teeth after her bedtime milk x

dementedpixie · 06/03/2020 23:22

If you were giving 20oz of formula then you didnt need to give vitamins. I would maybe still give the 2 bottles to start with and then gradually reduce amounts

Harrysmummy246 · 07/03/2020 20:38

And they shouldn't be having a bottle after 1yo either. Sippy cup then brush teeth before bed

StillWeRise · 07/03/2020 20:44

also, she can have full fat milk rather than semi skimmed (if that's what you normally drink)
what does she normally drink apart from formula?
if she isn't already drinking juice, don't start! water or milk!

doadeer · 07/03/2020 20:59

I don't know what age it stops but the HV give liquid vitamins for free. You can also buy from pharmacy but obviously more expensive. We give my 13 month old whole milk in a bottle before bed and when he first wakes. He doesn't drink well from sippy cup so I'm happy to stick with bottle for time being.

chardonayforme · 07/03/2020 22:49

I gave her cows milk before bed tonight and she went straight to sleep. Only one bottle missed the morning one and didn't give her any in the day

She refuses to use a sippy cup! I've tried so many and she will not drink from them. It's almost as if she doesn't understand how to? Even if it's free flow.
She drinks water if I put literally a drop of juice in but will drink water on it's own so I'll cut the juice out to! (Well, cordial)

We switched to cows milk (blue top) at 12 months

Willow4987 · 07/03/2020 22:56

We switched to full fat cows milk at 1 and add vitamins into this (using abidec at the minute). DS is 18 months and still having 2 9oz bottles of cows milk a day. Haven’t tried moving to a cup yet as it’s part of his bedtime routine. I am going to start moving it to before teeth brushing though

elephantskiss · 08/03/2020 07:40

Have you tried a Doidy cup? Or just a normal open cup? If she doesn't like the sippy cup, there are plenty others to try. How does she drink water during the day, has that been in a bottle too?

The thing about bottles is that they start to change how the teeth and mouth develop (plus they just don't need large quantities of milk anymore) so the aim at this age is to transfer them to an open cup as soon as you can. If you skip the sippy cup stage and go straight to an open cup, there's no harm.
