Comforter

My 9 month old loves there comforter but at the moment I’m taking it away once there asleep as I know the rule is nothing in the cot until 1. It is a silk one which is big enough that it could cover there face, but are they not old enough at this age to move it away if it was obstructing there breathing ?

I'd say no.
I'd keep it out all together even after one.

I'd say yes. Why would you take a child's comforter away?

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 29/02/2020 05:08

Why would you take a child's comforter away?

Because it's a suffocation risk? Also, if he's never had it at bedtime, why introduce a potential sleep crutch now?

Mine started to have a toy when they were old enough to indicate that they wanted it in bed and it did help them get to bed/sleep. I did however go in once they were asleep and move it away from near their head.

Why not use a different comforter? We introduced a crocheted granny square. Lots of holes.

TwoFeets · 29/02/2020 07:25

If they wanted to take it to bed and wouldn't settle without it then I'd be fine with it at this stage as they're old enough to move it or move around if they need to.

However, if they're happy to settle and for you to take it away then I wouldn't introduce it now or it'll become a "thing".

My first had a crochet square and it had to go everywhere with him until he started school - even if it was just in his bag and it's still under his pillow now he's 14! I didn't bother with a comforter for the second 🤣

I think if you can remove it without bother, keep doing that.

I only started leaving a teddy in with my 8 month old because she was sleeping terribly, would only settle with one and I couldn't stay awake long enough to wait until she was fully asleep to remove it (3659 times a night 😭).

I did check with my HV though. She said ultimately anything in the cot was more risk than not, but if it was the only thing working to do what I needed to do as the risk was so small. But that was a small teddy, not so big as to cover her face.

Thanks everyone, I introduced it because he was comfort sucking on the breast most of the night and it helps him get to sleep as he sucks on the tags. He’s brilliant at napping with it an goes in the cot awake. I don’t mind him using it as a sleep crutch I had one myself as a child till about 9-10! I tried to take it away last night whilst he was in bed with me and he cried until I gave it back so he could suck on it, bless him. It’s a shame there not safe I’m trying to weigh up wether it’s a big risk or not , or like someone else said perhaps there’s a breathable one I could buy, does anyone know of any? Or I thought maybe I could sew a smaller version to his sleep sack so it’s not loose in the cot🤔 has there been deaths at this age from suffocation from teddy’s , comforters?

@TwoFeets that’s what I was wondering , I know it’s a really horrid thought but say it was over there mouth and nose whilst sleeping at this age they would wake if they couldn’t breathe wouldn’t they ? and move it away?
