Perfect prep - order of making up a bottle

Hi, just wondering is there a reason you put in the boiling water, then the powder and shake and then the rest of the water?

Can you put in the formula, then the boiling water and shake and then add the rest of the water? Our scoops keep going claggy and powder sticking to it cos of the steam off the boiling water.

Would it make any difference as you are still adding the formula and the boiling water and all the water is pre-measured anyway.

I'm not sure about doing it the other way around but we had the same issue when we first started using it so we just use the small formula pots and tipped them in that way, it made it quicker too because we would set them up for the day in the morning and sterilise them at the end of the day and then restart the process in the morning Grin hope this helps!

The water burst at the beginning sterilises and it mixes better if you put formula into water rather than water into formula.

We use the little pots too.

We have always put the powder in first. Has always worked fine. Never realised that you were supposed to put the powder on top of the hot water. Both children are still alive.

If you are making the bottle manually from scratch you put the water in first as you can’t judge the water if putting into the bottle with formula instead.

If using the machine the guilde says to put the powder in first and then the hot shot gets added. Adding formula to the hot water can clog up the scoop. Iyswim

I always put the powder in first 🤷🏼‍♀️

TeddyBeans · 28/02/2020 06:34

Another who put the powder in before the hot water shot. DS was fine 😊

Bol87 · 28/02/2020 09:07

Always put the powder in first, I’ve never understood why they say the other way round.

My HV told me it’s actually a safer way of doing it. If you add the water first, it starts to cool during the time you are adding the formula scoops and potentially, the final scoops aren’t being added to 70+ degree water. Thus, not killing all the bacteria potentially.
If you add the powder into the bottle first, the hot shot hits all the powder at its hottest temperature and if you then quickly swirl around, you can be confident all the powder has been mixed with 70+ degree water!

Enchiladas · 28/02/2020 09:08

I always put the powder in first for the same reason. As long as you shake it well in the boiling water to sterilise the powder it makes no difference.

MyFartWillGoOn · 28/02/2020 10:14

My machine actually says to put powder in first so not sure where instructions that say otherwise are coming from?

I've got the day and night machine and it has a screen that flashes up instructions.

Once selected the amount to make up it says 'put powder in' (or words to that effect) then 'place bottle under machine' ... and so on?

Always done formula first as instructed!

ImitatingAdulthood · 28/02/2020 10:24

Water in first means you should get the correct ratio of water to powder. If the powder is put in first, the space taken up by the powder might mean that you don't use enough water, so the milk may be too concentrated. For example a 2oz feed should consist of 2oz of water plus the recommended amount of powder, not the recommended amount of powder plus any random volume of water to bring it up to 2oz in total.

Cyborgfeminist · 28/02/2020 10:28

We used the little formula pots like a PP said. I also found that having them all made up was helpful especially for a night feed when you might lose count of how many scoops you’ve already put in the bottle!

wimbler · 28/02/2020 10:51

The original perfect prep instructions tell you to do water first, the day and night one tells you to do powder first. My guess is that they realised the flaw with having to do it after and changed it on the newer version of the machine to make it more practical.
I had the original perfect prep and always did formula first. I really don't think it matters personally

Bol87 · 28/02/2020 11:11

@ImitatingAdulthood - the prep machine automatically dispenses the correct amount of water so you don’t need to worry about the powder affecting the volume. If making traditionally with a kettle, yes, you need water first to the correct oz & then powder. But the machine will always give the correct amount of water as you’ve selected. So powder can go in first.

Interesting they’ve changed the way to do it on the newer machine, it does make so much more sense!

20viona · 28/02/2020 11:20

Ah yes I have the day and night machine too

Cherry85 · 28/02/2020 11:29

Haha I thought our machine was new! But it's not the day and night one.

Thanks everyone, I couldn't work out what the difference would be if any! I think with our formula it blends easier just putting the powder in after the hot shot as I just need to swirl it where as putting it in first it sticks to the bottom a bit and I have to shake it.

crazymuseummumtobe · 28/02/2020 16:33

Ahhh, I've been wondering this exact thing because of the claggy scoop! Glad I saw this thread.

shutupsteph · 28/02/2020 18:07

Just jumping in and hijacking the thread; aquestion to people who use the little formula pits, do you sterilise once a day? how do you get them fully dry to add the powder? mine are always a little bit wet so powder sticks to them 🤷🏼‍♀️

frankierose13 · 28/02/2020 22:08

@shutupsteph we have 6 pots which last the day I sterilise them before bed and let them air dry overnight so in the morning they are good to use again Smile

kevintheorangecarrot · 28/02/2020 22:13

I've always done it the way you've described.

I put formula in first, then the perfect prep machine does the boiling water, I swirl it around til it dissolves, then the cool water goes in.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 29/02/2020 18:53

@shutupsteph just wipe them with kitchen roll when you've poured the formula in to the bottle
