1st time potty training - opinions on progress so far

DS (2.3) started to take an interest in the potty, wanting to sit on it, read 'I want my potty', etc.
Decided now would be a good time to tackle potty training as the weather is dry and I am due back at work in a month so he will be with different people on different days making potty training less consistent.
Started after his nap on Tues, put him in pants, gave him lots to drink. His initial enthusiasm to sit on the potty (heavily encouraged through the use of stickers) is starting to wane, have to use CBeebies to get him to stay on for very long now. Despite lots of praise and choc buttons when anything goes in the potty it is all still very mummy led, ie it is only if I see him squirming and clutching the relevant area and persuade him onto the potty that he gets anything in the potty. I have cleared my diary for a week but I seem to read lots of posts that say dd/ds was dry at end of day 1/2, etc.
Am I expecting too much too soon or is this pretty standard for this stage? Is he likely to stop saying 'no' when i ask him if he needs the potty then promptly peeing on the floor 2 seconds later? Is he not really ready and I should cut my losses and try again when I have got some time off work?

I would say he's not ready and leave it - I mean, you could persevere but it might take longer - as opposed to waiting til he's a bit older and then gets it in a week or two.

I agree - sounds like you should wait. Hate all the pressure to do so soon. Read in a potty training book today that health visitors in America have a saying 'start potty training at 2, and expect it to be complete by 3. Start potty training at 3 and expect it to be complete by 3'.

I'm having a bit more success with DD (2.4), but am only doing now because I have baby 2 expected in 5 weeks time and am now on maternity leave. I thought I was doing it too early, only to find out she is the last girl in our ante natal group to be trained!

Too early - but I always say that! If you leave it til they are ready - and that could be 3.5 like my ds or 2 like some on here, then it won't be a case of training - he will just be using the loo and no accidents. Or you can carry on, and you'll get there in the end, but with a lot of stress, washing and wet carpets. Leave it, and it will just happen, I promise!

Thanks for the replies. As you say probably not fully ready, about 80% there but it will be so much easier when he is 100% ready. I might stick at it for another couple of days as I have already cleared the diary but assuming no further progress will leave a few more months.

I think its all in the method. I CM so have taken advice on my first one from a colleague as my dd is not old enough or ready.
Try shoshables method.
No pants or bottoms for 3/4 days then if getting the idea about the potty he will be going to it after 3 days consistently with few accidents, then just have underpants for 3 days, then the next week back into all clothes.
If ds doesn't get the going to the potty after 3/4 days he isn't ready. Don't use pull ups as I found that my 2yo mindee was lazy and waited until the pull up went back on to wee! (holding it for up to 3/4 hours!)
It took 3 attempts over 2 months but she is now reliably dry.
Even in car journeys don't put nappies back on, just cover the seat with a towel folded around a nappy. Have to be very consistent.

Thanks Tori. Sounds kind of like what I was planning. I am only putting him in a nappy for nap time and night time. He has until the end of tomorrow to show some signs of improvement otherwise I will just put him back in nappies and leave it a while.
