TVs in kids bedrooms

Inspired by another thread with a 43” TV in a 3 year olds bedroom, do people think it’s ok to put TVs in kids bedrooms? And if you do think it’s ok, from what age?

I hate TVs in bedrooms full stop. Dh wants one in our room and I've said no. I wouldn't want my child to have one until they were much older, and that's reluctant

Mominatrix · 25/02/2020 12:46

Another never in this house.

Anyways, aren't TVs outdated anyways? No self respecting teen watches tele in the old way - it is all about streaming and smart TVs. I would definitely not be comfortable with a child having an internet capable TV in their bedrooms.

We have an ancient old style tv in the dds' room. It's not connected to get any tv channels and it is too old to connect to anything other than a not quite as ancient DVD player.
They have a great selection of DVDs we've picked up second hand and collected from family and friends.
I like this set up as it means they can watch a film in bed as a treat but are limited to the DVDs we've provided.

I don't think tvs are appropriate at any age in the bedroom. My teenager ds watches things on a tablet but that is easy to remove if needed!

HappydaysArehere · 25/02/2020 13:08

If you want your child to enjoy readIng at night don’t put a tv in their room.

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/02/2020 13:11

No televisions in bedrooms in this house either. Older teenagers have laptops so could watch things on those if they were so inclined.

Poetryinaction · 25/02/2020 14:43

No. I wouldn't have one in my bedroom either.

Barkley34 · 25/02/2020 15:22

Mine (now 16 and 12) both have them and have since they were little. I find it amazing that some feel so strongly against it. Then again, I blooming love TV and couldn't comprehend not having one in the bedroom.

I'm not sure what people think is going to happen with a TV in the room.

Strokethefurrywall · 25/02/2020 15:51

My kids have one in one of their rooms but it's only hooked up to the fire stick/Netflix and I don't think it would occur to either of them to watch it at night.

It only goes on during the weekend if they're playing LEGO upstairs and we're watching something else downstairs that they don't want to watch.

As they get older I'm sure there will be more call to try and watch shows later but they're not in the habit of watching it at night so we'll keep it that way.

We don't have a TV in the master either, I don't miss it.

Morgan12 · 25/02/2020 15:51

Ffs 😂😂😂😂

Strokethefurrywall · 25/02/2020 15:55

I don't really care about TVs in bedrooms though, I had one as a teen but don't remember ever wanting one there before.

We do have an 85" big screen in the living room though, and screens all over the place on iPads/phones etc, so I'd say that worrying about a Tv in a bedroom is less of a concern than kids having unlimited accesses to iPads of phones surely?!

helpmum2003 · 25/02/2020 15:58

No

BeyondMyWits · 25/02/2020 16:00

Nope, no TVs upstairs here. Not for us, not for them.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 25/02/2020 16:01

Personally don't think it's needed, dh and I don't have a tv in our room and ds won't have one in him.
Unless when he is older and had a part time job and buys one himself, which is what dhs parents did with him and that seems a logical compromise to me.

Oblomov20 · 25/02/2020 16:03

Yes. Most of my ds's friends play x box in their bedrooms.

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 25/02/2020 16:08

No children’s bedrooms are for reading, relaxing and sleeping in.
If I had a really tiny house and only 1 tv in the house I might put a spare telly in their room when they were teenagers. We have three TV’s downstairs so that’s more than enough.
I loved a tv in my room but didn’t have one until I was earning a wage and paid for it myself.

mypoorfurbaby · 25/02/2020 16:09

Nope never okay ever.
We don't have a tv in our room either.

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 25/02/2020 16:10

Definitely no to Xbox in bedrooms. Young primary school age nephew is often on his in the early hours of the morning and messaging teen DS to play. Fortunately we leave phones downstairs too to aid restful sleep so DS not disturbed.

Bluebell121 · 25/02/2020 20:34

Why has this women took my thread and asking about MY child on a different thread that's wrong?!?! This was my thread about my own situation and this person has put it on another thread asking about my child are you joking?!

Bluewavescrashing · 25/02/2020 20:37

No no no.

Bookshelf full of books, desk with paper and pens, colouring books, puzzlers etc if they want to wind down before bed.

Bluebell121 · 25/02/2020 20:37

@Barkley34 thank god there's someone in this world that isn't crying about a tv! This post is about my daughter like!

Barkley34 · 25/02/2020 21:16

Seriously though, I'm not sure what people think will happen with a TV in the room.
Someone even said bedrooms are for relaxing, as if watching TV isn't one of the top things to do to relax.
You think your children won't want to read? Instill a love of reading in them then.
Just hilarious the way people are acting like it's a major no no.

BrieAndChilli · 25/02/2020 21:31

I think ‘what will happen’ is kids will watch TV instead of going to sleep, watch TV late at night and watch inappropriate programmes, it’s much harder to monitor what they are watching when they are shut away upstairs, I think that it separates us all too much and I’d rather they were downstairs where I can chat to them.

Originalusernameunavailable · 25/02/2020 21:34

Mine have had TVs in their rooms from aged about 18 months. We are strict on usage mainly used at the weekends when we want a lie in

Bluebell121 · 25/02/2020 23:14

@Barkley34 I'm so glad your on the same page , my son goes to sleep with the sound of a fan on YouTube at night my daughter literally only watched tv from 7-8 and sometimes she would be asleep at 7.15!! She doesn't have a nap and yano how much she's learnt on her tablet watching people sing alphabet and number SHES noes all her abcs at 2 year old and can count to 20! She can read number and she noes the books off by heart we read on a night she reads them to me!! People make other people feel like bad parents because of this! Not been funny but this post was actually about my child I'm fuming x
