I found it useful for my first (now 6mths) as I didn't really have a clue where to start. I'm not sure about the toddler books though I'm afraid.
I'd recommend getting them out of the library before purchasing.

I really liked it as did my husband. Rather than inforcing a routine it gives you the tools you need to listen to your baby. Still, it's no magic cure but has some great ideas and is an enjoyable read.

I loved them, have the baby and toddler one.

I especially loved the descriptions of the babies, my dd was and still is a spirited baby, not quite so sure if I would have like the description if she had been a grumpy one.

I followed her general principles, for example her EASY plan, eat action sleep, you. A lot of it is common sense to be honest but it makes you feel more confident that it is in print. She does a programme on one of the heath channels on television as well which might give you an idea if she is for you.

I also read the Gina Fords and found myself probably settling in the middle.

thought they were terrific and have actually lent them to a friend of mine who's due in a few weeks. Like any book though, I think you need to take the advise which applies to you and your lifestyle - as well as your baby's make-up. At the end of the day they're just there for guidance and there's nothing better than mother's instinct!

I really liked the baby book. I have lent it to a friend and she liked it too. Haven't bought the toddler one yet.

I think she is great - full of common sense, helpful advice and ideas that simply work. Her EASY routine (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You time) is so obvious and yet so brilliant. I wish I had known about her when we first became parents but am relieved that at least we had discovered her practical approach in time for DD2.
Her TV series is also brilliant - often shown on obscure Sky channels during daytime hours and worth watching out for if you have access. Much easier and reasonable to follow than (dare I say it) GF.

Loved Baby Whisperer. She's very down-to-earth and as others have said it's really all pretty much commonsense but it's just so reassuring to see it all written down especially when you are floundering with a newborn!

What I really liked about them was the way she emphasises what the baby may be feeling - the baby whispering bit, I guess! - and to take things slowly. I do honestly think it helped me connect a bit more with ds in the early days when everything was a bit of a muddle.

It's all very practical and flexible. Not a miracle cure for problems but good, calm, sensible guidance, IMO.

I have always been a Gina Ford fan but love Baby Whisperer as she just adds the human bit in and gives you empowerment which I feel is so important to feel confident. I also settle somewhere in the middle of Gina and baby whisperer and haven't had any major probs so far with 2 DD's! Good luck!

Mirage · 04/10/2004 09:13

I found the Baby one a god send.DD had been sleeping through & then started waking again.I used the advice in the book & within 3 nights, she was back to normal again.I must admit I didn't believe it would work, but it did.

I have the toddler one now,but haven't used it yet-I feel I will soon though as DD is refusing meals.

The only thing I didn't like,is the way she uses 'quaint' English expressions, but I suppose that that is aimed at the American market.

I'd offer you my baby whisperer book, but I may be needing it again in the near future.

I watched the programme on discovery health, she also has a web site, i just typed in "baby whisperer" or "Tracey Hogg" and it came up. See if you can get any info from that. The programmes were fab, invaluable and are aired over and over,so you cant miss any of them.
You need some one like her in times of despair!

puddinggal · 07/10/2004 19:20

linnie, I really found these books useful. I adapted her ideas and found it a gentle way of getting ds into a routine. I found it more helpful as ds got older.

How much would you like for the toddler one? and would it help with getting her to sleep at night in her own bed? she is 2!
