I noticed my child's one eye was covered with this yellow sticky thing. Feeling concerned.

I had this with my little girl. I was told by the HV to try breast milk I thought she was joking but I put some of my milk on a cotton wool pad and dabbed it on her eye gently after 2 days it was completely clear Smile

DesLynamsMoustache · 19/02/2020 15:46

Could just be a blocked tear duct. Cooled boiled water and wipe with cotton wool. If it persists or gets worse then worth a trip to GP. My DD had an eye infection when she was about 6mo that started just weepy but quickly got really crusty and was obviously not quite right. Eye ointment sorted it out in no time.

It’s nothing to worry about as it’s probably a blocked tear duct. Cooled boiled water and a cotton pad will clean it and it’ll clear up within a few days, but if you’re concerned whatsoever do call your health visitor or make an appointment with your GP to double check.

My DS did for ages, it's normal they have lots of gunk that they get rid of when born

Primrose89 · 19/02/2020 15:48

Yes, DS was like thay for the first couple of weeks at least. It was a blocked tear duct as PP have said.

Sharkyfan · 19/02/2020 15:50

Yes two of mine did. Think we needed to bathe them in cooled boiled water, or try the breast milk thing but I think mine needed ointment from the GP in the end

SuperficialSuzie · 19/02/2020 15:52

Yes both of mine for a few days in one case and a few weeks in the other.

I was told it was just that the tear duct was blocked. It cleared up on its own just with bathing in cooled boiled water.

novacaneforthepain · 19/02/2020 15:54

Mine has had it for the first 6 months of life. First I was told "new born sticky eye". Then conjunctivitis , but the drops didn't work so they said "chronic viral conjunctivitis" (they swabbed to test for bacteria and there was none)

They told me it will go away over time on it's own. And it did!

Looked exactly the same as your little ones. X

Hi , op here.
I noticed all of you saying wiping eyes gently with cotton swabbed in cool boiled water. I had actually used tap water.
I know it's stupid mistake. Let's hope it doesn't create more problems

Could be conjunctivitis. If your baby is less than 28 days then you should see a GP today.

novacaneforthepain · 19/02/2020 16:19

OP, I used tap water from birth on the eyes on both my kids. Same stupid mistake but didn't harm them x

sarahhoping · 19/02/2020 16:24

I had just today visited paediatrician and told her abt baby's teary eyes. Till yesterday baby had teary eyes, not sticky. She asked us if eyes were sticky.
Now it's sticky. I guess I have to visit paediatrician again tomorrow.

All of my DC had this and it was completely normal. I just cleaned it with cooled down boiling water on cotton balls.

tenredthings · 19/02/2020 16:37

If you are breast feeding squirt some milk on their eyes. It has amazing healing properties. Also make sure you use a different cotton ball for each eye.

TheVoiceInTheShed · 19/02/2020 16:38

I second the breast milk treatment- works like magic, just squirt some on at each feed

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/02/2020 16:44

Breastmilk is what you need!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 19/02/2020 16:47

Yeah it's really common, my DS had it and squirting breastmilk worked a treat!

DappledThings · 19/02/2020 23:10

Also had it and yes breastmilk is the best thing. I was advised to squirt it straight on but having tried that once and realised there was no way on earth I could aim that accurately I hand expressed into a little dish then wiped on with cotton wool.

If anyone ever did manage to squirt it directly I'm most impressed!
