Did anybody here have DCs who were late at reaching milestones?

My DS 10mo has only just started mastered rolling over back to front. Only at 9 months was he able to sit up unaided and even now he's still a bit wobbly. I wouldn't leave him to be sitting up unattended for fear of him falling and banging his head.

Does this seem late to be reaching these milestones? I know people say don't compare to other babies but I do feel worried about his development.

Has anybody else's DC been like this? Did it affect them later on in life?

I hope I'm stressing over nothing here but I don't know as he's my first DC

Also my stepdads DM said to me the other day is he not walking yet? He should be.

Surely it's not the norm for a 10 month old to be walking Confused

DD1 was late hitting all hers and she’s just fine now (6)
She was about 18mths before she walked.
Then DD2 took us by surprise, could walk and talk by 10mths!
They’re all different, I wouldn’t worry at this stage

bathorshower · 17/02/2020 11:29

Walking would be unusual, but not impossible at this point - I asked the HV about the normal range because DD was slow, and was told that anything between 6 and 24 months was normal for starting to walk.

DD sat on time, but everything else was late - she crawled at 12 months, and walked at 17. While she still isn't the most physically adventurous, she walks/runs/jumps like any other child. If you're concerned, contact your HV (and ignore your relatives!).

I have 5 dc.
Dc5 walked at 9.5 months.
Dc2 was almost 2 before he walked. He was still wobbly sitting up until he was about a year, and didn't crawl until 14/15 months.
The others all fell somewhere in between.
You'd never know now, they're all as clumsy as each other!
My niece is 6 months younger than dc5, and she was speaking in full sentences when dc5 was still struggling to put 2 words together. But niece didn't walk until much later, dc5 was running rings round her while niece was shouting at her!
If you're really worried, speak to your health visitor, but some kids are slower than others. They (mostly) all get there in the end up, just at their own pace.

BrieAndChilli · 17/02/2020 12:44

mine all walked at 9/10 months (yet DS1 didnt utter a single word until he was 2 1/2 years old!) yet my nephew didnt walk until he was 18 months. theres only 6 weeks between him and DS2 and you'd never know now they are 9 years who walked first.

1Wildheartsease · 17/02/2020 12:49

They are all different-try not to worry. (10months is young for walking anyway)

Experience here suggests that slower walkers are often faster talkers (clearly their priorities vary even so young).

walking/talking are things we measure-but babies might well be busy learning or developing other things too.

(Now ours are teens and older, you can't tell which walked early and which began with other matters.)

twelveminutespast · 17/02/2020 13:16

@1Wildheartsease Yes I think that will be true! He's very babbly and I think sometimes when we say something he will try to imitate the sound

They’re either a walker or a talker usually.. 11month old ds isn’t walking yet either. He can pull to stand and stand for a short burst with no hands. But all I get is dada and goi sounds. He was slow at rolling, holding his head off the floor etc. But once he figured sitting he was up.

At this stage they’re all so different with what they do when and unless it’s something serious that a hv would’ve said about you can’t tell when they’re older.

I also think some of the older generations don’t remember as clearly as they let on.. mil had hers apparently potty trained at 1. So perhaps they walked near the year mark but exact times aren’t guaranteed.

DappledThings · 17/02/2020 15:16

DD didn't roll till she was a year. She bum-shuffled at about 15 months, crawled at 19 and finally walked at 21. Now just over 2 and no stopping her

1Wildheartsease · 17/02/2020 15:28

@Lunafortheloveogod - my mother-in-law also had hers potty-trained by the time they reached 1 year... am I very bad to think that she (and many of her generation ) didn't have amazingly talented babies but were just very good at catching (and not at all keen on hand-washing all those terry nappies)?

I'm rubbish at catching and mine were in nappies much longer ;)

WitchSharkadder · 17/02/2020 15:31

10 months is still so very young, OP. There so much variation in when they hit those milestones but if it reassures you at all, my 15 year old was very late regarding his motor skills (sat just under a year old, crawled 14 months and walked 20 months) but now he's perfectly fine, as is my now 9 year old who walked before he was 9 months old. They'll do it when they're ready.

Please tell anyone who is making you feel bad about this to do one.

knittedgoldfish · 17/02/2020 15:33

Eh, mine was late with everything. Crawled at 15 months. Not talking at 18 months either. She's 2.5 and ahead or on track with everything now. We had a referral at 16 months but cancelled it because she started walking.

Sittingonthefence83 · 17/02/2020 15:36

My first DC crawled at one years old and didn't walk until two years old. She's 6 now and that has absolutely no negative impact on her what so ever, no Otis always problems at all. Just really really late.

Sittingonthefence83 · 17/02/2020 15:37

*Otis always = physical 🙄

twelveminutespast · 17/02/2020 15:47

Thanks everyone, I do find it hard not to worry. He was born 2 weeks early so I do wonder sometimes if this is a factor? It's astounding how other babies I know his age seem so much further ahead. I try hard not to care or compare. I know he will do it all in his own time and I try my best to just enjoy every moment.

Either way he is just so perfect in my eyes and I know all of this won't matter when he's older!

@1Wildheartsease god only knows.. mil used disposables too. So she must’ve just been a good catcher with two under two Grin.. or as usual likes to win lol.

Orchidflower1 · 17/02/2020 16:07

@twelveminutespast it’s incredibly hard not to take it to heart when well meaning relatives say “ oh can he/ she not do xyz yet”

Dd was 17 months, 3 weeks and 4days old when she walked. I remember specifically because I asked HV when she was 15 months why she wasn’t walking. HV said she’d only be concerned if not walking at 18 months.

Dd has not been late with any other milestones but I think they are better at some things than others ( she could feed herself with a fork at 1).

Please don’t worry and enjoy it as it comes. My granny used to say “ they’re all the same by 3” and I think there is some truth in that.

kenandbarbie · 17/02/2020 16:10

I have four dc. My youngest is 13 months, she isn't walking. I'm not one bit worried. She'll do it when she's ready.

kenandbarbie · 17/02/2020 16:14

Also, crawling is a really important stage. It's important that they do it for a long time. They move their left leg with their right arm and vice versa. Getting this mastered is really important for balance and co ordination later on.

userabcname · 17/02/2020 16:31

DS1 pretty much never rolled (lazy sod!), sat unaided at 5mo crawled at 11mo and walked at 13mo. I think aside from the crawling he was pretty much bang on average. His speech was a bit slower although within the normal range (HV seemed happy enough at his 2 and a half year check anyway). Meanwhile, I know other babies who crawled at 6mo, walked at 8mo and were talking well long before their 2nd birthdays, yet others who didn't walk until 18mo and didn't talk until 3yo. All of these children are perfectly normal, neurotypical, happy and healthy! Try not to stress and try not to compare although it is hard not to I agree.

Notthebloodygym · 17/02/2020 17:21

One of mine was late at walking and talking. Very late at talking actually. I was beside myself. Anyway I wish he'd stop now sometimes, although it's calmed down here since he went to university.

tempnamechange98765 · 17/02/2020 20:29

My DS was on the late side with most physical things and definitely late walking. He:
Rolled at 6-7 months
Sat up solidly at 7.5-8 months
Commando crawled at 10 months
Traditional crawling at 11 months
Pulled to stand 13 months
Cruising/walking pushing a walker at 14-15 months
Walked properly finally at almost 19 months

He's 4 now and although he's been later to run properly, jump etc, we actually saw a physio at the beginning of the year and she said he's totally fine. I notice he's a lot more cautious and doesn't seem as fast as his peers, but he's very good at climbing eg in softplay, he's great on his scooter. The physio said some children just take longer!
