White noise

White noise seems to work like magic to keep my baby asleep. She is 10 weeks old and we just discovered this really helps keep her sleeping. She will wake so easily with out it (until she enters her deep night sleep). The wind will wake her. A plane outside wakes her. If someone all the way down stairs talks too loudly it wakes her! It’s so frustrating how a needle can drop and she will wake. White noise seems to help drown out the other noises. I’m just worried she will become addicted to it. Has anyone used white noise and had no problem to stop using it later down the line?

Does it matter? We have a white noise machine in our bedroom as we share room with baby, but I've found it also helps me! I'm terrible for sleep, always have been, but since getting the noise machine I can actually fall asleep and stay asleep! That is until the baby wakes me Grin
You can buy them for £20 in argos and they can use a mains plug. One isn't included but it's just a standard radio plug and easy to buy.

Dancingbugbadge · 16/02/2020 21:01

My ds still had white noise to fall asleep with. Hes 18 months now and I see no harm in it as its easily available and at nap time he does fine without it. The only issue I have is that I cant fall asleep in silence. But that's my own fault as he falls asleep in out room and after moving him to his cot we tend to keep it on all night.

My niece now turns her white noise off herself 😂 she’s 22 months.

I wonder if it would help my sleep, as I wakevery easily and the city is freaking noisy!!!

White noise was a godsend here! We used it up until around aged 3 when they stopped asking for it themselves. No issues. Enjoy your sleep! ☺️

ACJD · 16/02/2020 21:48

Still using it for my daughter just turned 2 and my 10mo son giggles when he hears it playing but is asleep within minutes. I find it great also for getting to sleep quickly esp if I've been up throughout the night.

Itsmommy · 17/02/2020 20:30

Our white noise machines get louder w each kid and we parents benefitted too and so bought a machine for us- can only hear the noises you need to hear and drowns our the buzzing baby monitor, traffic, one kid crying doesn’t wake up the other etc

Bluebell121 · 19/02/2020 19:30

My son is 16month old and will not sleep without me putting a fan sound on YouTube! Honestly wish I new it when he was younger he was a nightmare 😂

MynameisJune · 19/02/2020 19:33

I’m in my 30’s and use white noise to sleep! As sleep crutches go it’s not a bad one really. Doesn’t harm anyone, is easy to transport, can never get lost etc.

modge · 19/02/2020 19:41

My toddler still has white noise at night and naps at home, although manages fine without at nursery nap time. Like others, we also now have it too after getting accustomed to it in the early days when baby was sleeping in our room. The first night they slept in their cot, we were thrown by the silence Grin. I remember being concerned about the 'sleep prop' aspect when he was tiny but really wouldn't worry about that now, it's so low level. I'll also note that during sleep regressions etc, it didn't stop the disruption although I think it remained a useful cue for sleeping.

We use an app so have it on our phones/tablets and use an old sim free phone in airplane mode in the toddler's room set. Free and easily transportable.

Got it with my first dc and then wondered where it had been all.my life in noisy city centre flats. Hugely improved my quality of life. Banging doors, barking dogs, pub drunks etc etc all ceased bothering me. Now I have another dc, 2x white noise machines plus USB charging variety for out and about. We are never without it for a night, and I see no reason to stop whilst it continues to help people sleep.

Squaretoe · 19/02/2020 19:50

We all have white noise in our bedrooms - DH and I, and both DDs aged 3 and nearly 5! It’s not a big deal really, we have white noise apps on our phones (the girls have old phones with no SIM cards in in their rooms) and we all sleep better for having it!

WinterCat · 19/02/2020 19:57

Used white noise with all my children and no problems stopping it (but I see no harm in continuing it if a child wants it on). I often put it on for DC4 so he will feed without being distracted.

cookielove · 19/02/2020 20:01

We use white noise for our little one who is now 5 😊 we were going to wean him off when he was younger (and he will sleep without it anyway) but for us we were ttc and thought having the white noise may help when sharing with the baby, as it is it took almost 3 years to conceive so he still has it.

He has an app on an old phone.

It is perfect for fireworks!!! And what not

mistermagpie · 19/02/2020 20:11

My oldest son is 4 and sleeps with white noise, it's not a problem I don't think.

And I'm nearly 40 and so do I! It is addictive I think because we started using it in our room when oldest was a baby, and now I can't sleep without it on. Luckily it doesn't bother my husband.

Middle child is 2 and also has it and we have the youngest in our room, so everyone in our house has white noise... 😳

userabcname · 19/02/2020 20:11

I used it with ds1 for well over a year. He's 2 and a half now and sleeps fine without it. Currently using it with ds2 who is 4mo. I'll use it as long as it works! Nothing is as bad as sleep deprivation.

Mamabear12 · 20/02/2020 06:51

I have started using white noise sometimes. Mostly when we first put dd down for the first hour, as she is easy to wake when she first goes down and it’s so friggin loud in this house and outside!! Then I turn it off and she sleeps a few hours until her next feed. I turn it back on during her early morning feed when the planes start landing again, as they are so friggin loud!!!

If it works, use it!

When shes older she can choose if she wants it or not. Meanwhile you all get some sleep. WIn win!

jesslambo88 · 25/02/2020 17:08

Hi Hun I'm following to as I was worried our little one might get addicted to it and have to rely on it...our little boy hasn't been sleeping properly for around 4 weeks now...we think it could be the 18 month regression so he's waking 2/3 times a night sometimes and me and my husband are exhausted...our little boy has always slept through aswel xx

Mummyshark2018 · 25/02/2020 18:10

My dc8 still puts the white noise machine on at night. We live on a busy road so it helps drown out those noises. She sleeps great btw

jesslambo88 · 25/02/2020 19:06

We also live on a busy road and find he's disturbed easy and if there's bad weather like wind and rain...how loud should the white noise be xx

123456kent · 25/02/2020 20:09

Also still using white noise on an old phone app at 2.5, no dependency, she can sleep with or without it but we’ve just kept it going for various reasons (there’s a holiday coming up, there’s a new baby arriving soon etc). It takes the pressure off to keep the house quiet during nap and night times. Used it since birth, my daughter is an excellent sleeper.
Would like to use for baby2 but dont have another spare phone.
Does anyone have a link to one we can buy that powers off the mains and doesnt switch off all night please?
Thanks

Bol87 · 25/02/2020 21:59

Why are people so worried about white noise?! It’s just a sound, same as listening to the pouring rain out your window etc.. I’m 32 & I use white noise to go to sleep. I have for years. It helps me drop off quickly & get a good nights sleep?! So long as it’s not at a volume that could hurt your hearing (which would be highly unlikely!), what’s the issue?

My DD who is 2.5 still has white noise all night 🤷🏼‍♀️ she can use it for as long as it helps her sleep..!

JumpingOnTheBed · 25/02/2020 22:04

Our DD is almost 3 and we still use White noise, she is the same as your little one and wakes at the smallest of noises (the last 3 years have been great fun haha).

She can also sleep without it, your little one will be fine.

Aintlifelikethat · 25/02/2020 22:40

123456kent we use an amazon echo. We just ask it to play white noise on a loop. Not sure if you need prime though?
