Colic/reflux in 2 week old

My 2 week old DS has been inconsolably screaming late at night for hours, he seems in real pain and as though he's straining even though he has very regular bowel movements so not constipated etc.
I called 111 in desperation last night who advised me to go to a&e, when we got there the doctor suggested it was colic and reflux, and prescribed omeprazole. I went to the pharmacy to collect the omeprazole prescription and was told they needed to order it in.
Does anyone please have any advice on how I can best alleviate his discomfort in the mean time? It's so distressing seeing your tiny newborn screaming like that!

Sorry also meant to add - he is breastfed, is there anything others have found that cutting from their diet has helped?

Sorry you LO is having this trouble OP. Poor lil guy. My eldest DD had colic and reflux something awful, used to break my heart to see her in pain. She was sick constantly and whilst we never took her to the doctor we tried various things... Gripe water was a lifesaver for a while and Colief. She snapped out of it almost overnight at 3 months old, then by the time she was weaned it was gone. I tho K that's pretty common, and I might add she's a bonnie happy girl now, no lasting effects. Good luck xx

When will they have the omeprazole in? It works pretty quickly, you should notice a big difference within 48 hours.

In the meantime (and even when you have the omeprazole), hold him upright after feeds for 20-30 minutes and gently wind him (rub, don't pat) regularly. Lying on their belly closes the flap in the oesophagus so after you've held him upright do some tummy time. I used to lie on the sofa / bed and lie baby on my chest. He actually slept like this for the first 8 weeks of his life.

Is he visibly refluxing - bringing up feeds? If so, you can use a thickener called Carobel before breastfeeding to help keep the milk down.

Also, a lot of babies with reflux also have cow milk protein intolerance so you could try cutting out dairy in all forms. This will take several weeks to leave your system and then his. And then a good proportion of dairy intolerant kids also have a soy intolerance so if dairy alone doesn't make a difference you could then remove soy. But it's all guesswork / trial and error and results aren't immediate.

Hopefully the omeprazole alone will make a difference.
