What time is bedtime 14mo...

DD is 14mo. Always been a terrible sleeper. Did some sleep training and night weaned at 10mo and with this managed to get down to 1-2 wake ups at night. With illness/starting nursery etc everything has gone to pot and she is now needing rocking or patting to sleep and is up most nights 12-3 just wide awake. Bedtime and naps take an hour to settle. Shattered in the day but still naps terribly. She won’t co-sleep, she just gets really excited and at most thrashes about our bed getting frustrated.

Someone I spoke to said she’s probably in bed for too long overnight, and that’s why she has these periods of being awake overnight. I’d say since being 8mo she’s had these periods of wakefulness 75% of nights. I am now constantly ill and I’m sure it’s because my immune system is in pieces through lack of sleep. DH is struggling at work and our relationship is suffering.

We’re going to start CIO and just be quite ruthless with it. No judgement needed there - it really has reached a breaking point for us. We have no family support so no respite and we’ve been surviving on 4 hours of broken sleep for too long now.

So what are your routines for your 14mo? I’m thinking if I put her to bed at 8pm I could wake her at 7:30am. And then expect her to nap at midday for an hour (that’s the longest she generally does) and she won’t do more than one nap a day anymore. I’ve previously been putting her to bed earlier (about 6:30) because of the terrible napping, but perhaps that’s where I’ve been going wrong.

Any help greatly appreciated.

My son is a little younger than your daughter but he only has 1 nap per day. He's naturally fallen into bedtime of 8pm usually asleep by 8.30 at the latest but varies in that half an hour. He then sleeps through and wakes at 6.30. Obviously we have days when this isn't the case if he's teething or ill for example. He naps usually 12-2.30 but again this can vary depending on wake up time. He's usually awake for 5.5 hours in the morning before needing a nap so if he wakes at 6am we adjust and put him down at 11.30am.

Good luck, I know how it feels to not have enough sleep. We're just lucky now that he's a fairly good sleeper but to start with he was a nightmare.

My daughter is 19 months but her bedtime is 7 with one nap in the day at around lunchtime. She was having 2 naps but stopped the 2nd at around 14 months.

My 14 month old goes to bed at 7.15pm and wakes anywhere between 5am on a bad day to 7am in a good day. He has 2 naps, one at about 9, the other at 1 (about 45 mins each).

My eldest went down to 1 nap at 15 months. I tried 14 month old on one nap recently but didn’t work so sticking with 2 for now.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like 10 hours of sleep at night is quite normal then? In which case I can see how us putting her to bed at 6:30 and her waking at 7:30 wouldn’t work..but she seems SO ready for bed at that time. I also really struggle in the dark evenings to keep her up that late because we just become limited to the house between 4-8pm effectively, which is mind-numbingly boring (for her too I think).

My DD adores her sleep and sleeps from 7.30/8.00 - 7.00/7.30.

We put her to bed a little later on the weekend and she’ll generally wake a little later so we can have a lie in.

14 month old has to have a 6.30 bedtime due to me being a teacher and needing to work every evening. However she is always at the in laws by 7am each day so think we have an earlier day in general.

Bed by 6.30, used to be a terrible sleeper (self settled from the start so wasn’t that issue....) but since she’s been walking from 12 months she generally sleeps until between 5 and 5.30. One nap of half an hour to an hour at 11.

I think they do all have massively different sleep ‘needs’ though so please don’t get your hopes up on this being the cure! We tried a late bedtime in desperation at one point and it only served to make her overtired by bedtime, but still awake all night....

Bed is around 8, takes ages to feed to sleep. On average around 30 - 45 minutes.

Wakes 5 - 8 times overnight, easily settled with boob most of the time.

Wakes for the day around 8.15, although some days it's 7 and others it's 9.30.

One nap at about 1 pm for around 2 hours, sometimes needing to be resettled with boob at the 45 minute point. This can be as short as 45 minutes or as long as 3 hours and has no bearing on overnight waking!

I've tried earlier bedtime, it just leads to it taking 3 hours for her to go to sleep and waking at 5 am. I've tried later bed and while she does go down quicker, we wake at 5 am. I don't do waking at 5 am.
