I was just thinking today about being prepared for when the day comes. What did you get in stock - I wear ginourmous pads for a heavy flow and hate tampons so I am a bad person to know this stuff. Do I just get some quite small pads or are there specific brands and types aimed at younger girls. DD is 9 but quite developed and I want to be prepared if she starts early.

Mine were very heavy from the outset. I would get some packs in a range of absorbencies and see what she needs.

Always Infinity are amazing, amazing sanitary towels - they have a foam core so they hold much more than regular towels, so even the night time highest absorbency and very slim, and the top layer doesn’t feel plasticky either. Unfortunately not many places stock them but if you can find them I think they’d be the ideal thing to use at first.

If not, Always Platinum aren’t bad, and comfier than others, although they are scented which I hate.

I bought Always teen pads, DD still hasn't used them all and I have no idea when she has her period.

doadeer · 07/02/2020 22:03

I remember I didn't use tampons till I was 14ish I wouldnt have been able to do that at 9 when I started.

I think my mum just got me Always sanitary towels.

Worth getting a little bag she can put in her school bag with spare knickers, wipes, pads etc maybe?

I’ve got various packs of the lillets teen pad range for when dd starts.

There are some really great eco-friendly products out there now that are actually super comfortable. I wear Modibodi knickers (look them up) and I believe they make options for younger girls though all styles would work. It just depends on what her flow turns out to be like but I would highly recommend as they are easier, more environmentally friendly and also cheaper in the long run. Just a suggestion! Smile

Lilets do a teen range they are quite good. Cheap too so good to buy for a first time as you dont feel you wasted too much if it's not til 4 years later.

I went with a pencil case as its less obvious in the bag. A plain black one with the three compartments. The middle one zips up so perfect for a spare spare of pants and a small wet bag. I wouldbt worry about buying alot as it could just be sitting around for a few years.

Just avoid scented ones

Lipperfromchipper · 07/02/2020 22:11

I also started at 9 I think I just used the always pads. I would advise putting a little bag in her school bag with fresh underwear, a few pads and maybe a small pack of baby wipes(the take away size you get in boots) and a nappy bag for stained underwear.

TheHagOnTheHill · 07/02/2020 22:11

I got the lilets pack so she was familiar with the when he time came.I hot the teen pads until she was big enough to use adult size.
We got a pretty bag for school and some bags incase the bins were missing she also had some neurophen melts for cramps.
She tried the tiny tampons for swimming when she was 12 and used them more as she got confident.Shes 16 and for the last few years has had a moon cup.

chickedeee · 07/02/2020 22:14

Lilets teenage pads and tampons.

Also no scented ones.

Always sensitive or bodyform, bought lots for her to try until she settled for one she liked

Pipandmum · 07/02/2020 22:16

My daughter's period is quite heavy and I get Always ultra. The teen range are not absorbent enough. I also bought those period pants off of Amazon - not the Modibodi ones just the ones that you use with a pad as an extra layer of leak proof protection. She's very reluctant to go to the toilet at school unless its break time so it has saved her a few times! She will not consider wearing a tampon yet. I keep track of when she's due and give her the period pants (she has them in her room but I lay out her uniform and make sure she has them) to wear when I think it's imminent- she won't tell me but I know. I Keep a stock of Always in the bathroom plus some panty liners for when it tapers off. She takes care of herself now - it took about a year or so for her period to become regular (started at 11 and she's 14 now).

I bought a whole range of brands and sizes and just let dd decide which ones worked best for her.
She is 12 and started just after Christmas.
She was just like me - totally horrified by the thought of tampons until she'd spent a couple of days wearing pads!!
I gave her a little advice, she locked herself in the bathroom and had done it successfully within five minutes.
She's just had her second one and I didn't have to get involved at all this time.

Mummyeyes · 07/02/2020 22:32

I got a whole variety and made her up a "young lady's emergency kit" for school. Supermarket own brands - cheap, unscented, do the job. The teen lillets. A tiny pretty sparkly lavender cup in a fairy bag. Some nighttime pads. Nappy bags. Plain black panties. I put it together when she was 9. She is 12 and still not started but likes that she is prepared and that she always had a spare pad for a friend if they needed one.

SinkGirl · 08/02/2020 07:54

My only concern with the advice above is that if she does have very heavy periods from the start as I did (and she may if you have heavy periods yourself), using teen pads or supermarket own brand may not be enough. I leaked at school several times and it was awful.

It’s all down to personal preference and needs so I’d get a little range and see what you need. Donate any unused packs to a food bank.

Again, to anyone whose child has really heavy periods I’d really recommend Always Infinity (no I’m not on commission 😂) - they are miraculous things, I bleed through all other pads very quickly but these last easily 3-4 times as long and are so comfortable in comparison.
