Cheerios... choking hazard?

How do people feel about Cheerios as a finger food for a 7 month old?

If it helps to know: no teeth but he does a lot of finger food and seems quite OK with it, there’s not a dramatic amount of gagging.

They’re probably not great in terms of sugar but mine loved them and they dissolve easily so choking risk is minimal I think.

In fact even now two are teens, a bowl of dry Cheerios is considered a good snack when they have the munchies.

Everything is potentially a choking hazard. They have a hole in the middle so air should still be able to get through.

My DD has never had any problems with them. I just wish the low sugar ones were more easily available. None of our local supermarkets stock it Sad and I can't get it online without paying a fortune either.

MindyStClaire · 07/02/2020 13:18

Wouldn't even have occurred to me as being a choking hazard.

That’s so reassuring thank you! Gave LO some this morning got shocked faces from other mums. I was more concerned about the sugar content to be honest. But then not enough actually went in 😂

Both of mine ate them at a young age - choking hazard didn’t cross my mind .

No more a choking hazard than any other food. Babies have a quicker gag reflex so try not to worry.
Grapes need to be sliced up and anything that are lozenge shape and could lodge in the throat.
There's more sugar in raisins surely. What is an acceptable snack? Those mega expensive baby crisps?

MindyStClaire · 07/02/2020 13:37

Loads of babies wean straight to proper solids these days at 6 months, and a puree never passes their lips. We did a mix with DD, but she definitely preferred finger foods so they quickly took over. Bewildered at the thought of cheerios surprising anyone!

In the wrong scenario, everything has the potential to be a choking hazard but Cheerios are a long way down my list of foods to worry about (popcorn, grapes, some blueberries etc are all much more of a concern).
