Holiday tips with a baby!?

So we’ve just booked our first holiday in June with DD, she will be 6 months old.

It occurred to me that there’s going to be a lot more involved preparing for this holiday than if it was just me and DP. So has anyone got any tips, tricks or lists for what to take, or remember to pack, things you could and couldn’t be without?

Anything helps just throw your ideas at me. We’re not going abroad, only down to Devon for a long weekend. Easing us into the holidaying with a child stuff!

Well, successful thread so far.

I’ll just go wallow in my self pity.

Don’t all jump at once.

Not even a “I didn’t want to read and run”

You’ve all read and ran.

It’s easy in the Uk as you can drive with everything you need essentially and if you forget just buy the same there.abroad is a whole different ball game!

Check they have a travel cot is my only tip... if not take one !

Accept the inevitable truth that it will not be a holiday as you usually know it. Plan driving around naps. Bring a baby carrier.

I second checking Re the cot. And take a spare sheet as some places just stick a single bed flat sheet on and it's safer to use a fitter cot sheet.

If it's an apartment check if they also have a high chair for you to use.

If you bottle feed consider some small premade bottles for days out etc. And see if you can take a microwaveable box steriliser.

Don't pack loads of food. If you're self catering get a supermarket delivery once you arrive.

Have a fab time! We took DS to London aged 6months for a weekend and Cornwall for a week at 7months. We had a lovely time. I'm sure you will too!

😂😂😂 ah why thank you all!

I do bottle feed, so good idea with the ready made formulas!

I don’t have a box steriliser, we have the self sterilising MAM bottles.. but I thought at 6 months old you could just wash in hot soapy water at that point? I can’t remember where I read it 🙈

Oh my god I didn’t even think about a high chair! I suppose at 5 weeks old were not at that point yet lol.

We plan to take our travel cot anyway as they don’t provide them and I like that ours is off the floor a bit more than the basic travel cots.

I’m intrigued to see how everything will fit in my car.. assuming we haven’t upgraded my golf for a bigger car by then, then I think we will just get by!

Ah maybe you don't need to sterilise at all then - I didn't use formula so I may have that totally wrong! 🙈

We mainly used the baby carrier but also got an easy folding light weight stroller (Joie nitro on sale for £40) that was really useful too.

We’ve done a few UK holidays with our baby and essentially packed up our entire house and took it with us. It’s gets less and less each time thank god!

UK advice is to sterilise until 12 months but I stopped at about 9 months so that part is totally up to you. I used milton cold water sterilising on holiday. I took a large tupperware (5 liters) which I filled with clothes in the suitcase so it didn't take up much space. We were in a hotel without access to a microwave etc so this was really my only option. I also took a small amount of washing up liquid and a bottle brush and washed everything out in the bathroom sink. Whenever we went away in the UK I took my perfect prep with me which I would 100% recommend! If space in the car is limited, only take the necessities and get the rest when you arrive at the supermarket or arrange for an online shop to be delivered

The ikea high chair is great. So cheap and the legs come off so its easy to get in the car but definitely check if there’s one where you are staying. I find holiday rentals are generally good at catering to babies/young children.

Check that there is a bath, if not I’d recommend taking a baby one if you can, at least then you can use the shower to fill it up.
