Baby Flat head Syndrome

Was wondering if anyone else has experience of this? My 3 month olds head is quite flat, I noticed it on one side about 5 weeks ago and now also the middle back too.
I have spoken to health visitor and the doctor was also there, they said things like encourage to turn head other way by playing and changing cot around etc. I have tried these things, have him sleep on me during the day to take pressure off, also bought a special pillow, but I really don’t think it’s helping if anything might even be getting worse.

What did you do to help? Did it get completely better? At what age? I know they say once they can sit up more it will be better but that seems a long way off and want to help if I can. Stupidly googled and read that some studies linked flat head to some developmental delays so now I’m worried about this as well as the way it looks.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Does your baby have torticollis? It’s where they have a stiff neck which prevents turning the head freely so they get a flat head on one side.

My youngest did, 2-3 appointments at a cranial osteopath completely sorted it. It was private but very worth the cost. I would look for one that specialises in babies and children. No amount of exercises and dangling toys helps if the joints are seized up, but I noticed significant improvement after the first visit.

This was probably 6-9 weeks. If you fix that, I suspect the flat head will gradually improve if you try to prevent lying on it (sling, held upright, tummy time).

Move him around so he is not always in the cot or on you. So put him on his play mat. Give him tummy time. Shake a rattle or toys at him to make him move his head. Babies dont really move their heads of their own accord. You have to engage with them and stimulate them. I know I have a 3 month old and we are always playing.

Hiya hun, my son is now 12months and also had a flat side where he preffered to lay, even though i put him on his back, he would turn his head to the left. I was also worried, and googled and done everything i could, by 8months it was still pretty bad, spoke to hv and she reffered me to physio with him, he had as assesment and assured me all was fine develepomentally, which tbh i already knew, and she said the bones dont fuse until 2.5-3yrs and that it will fill out naturally. And i have to say he is just turned 12 months and the improvement is huge i think! If i could up load some pics to show you inwould, but i dont know how or if its allowed? The more time the spend off thier head, the better xx

My son had a flat patch on his head at a similar age.

He's six now and mostly it's filled out -you can't tell.
