Using cot bed matress again for dd2

Hi all

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Dd1 was in her cot bed until 4.5 years. Same matress for the 4.5 years.
We used a waterproof matress protector with it and obviously a sheet aswell. She rarely leaked when in nappies, and was still in night time pull ups at the point she went into her new bed. Has never been properly sick in bed either (she obviously spit up a bit when she was a baby, but never what I call proper sick when she was older). She has also always been quite a light child (below 25th centile). So the matress looks and feels like new. No marks, no dents from where she has been laying.

DD2 is due to go into the cot bed in a month or so. Will get all new bedding. But just wondering about replacing the matress.

Is it always recommended to get a new matress for a new child going into the bed, or is it a judgement call based on how the matress has faired? If it is recommended to replace, is there anything I can do with the old matress other than just take it to the tip?

Thanks

Always a brand new mattress.

The Lullaby Trust say a new mattress every time.

This is from the Lullaby trust -

It can be common to use a second-hand mattress either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress brought in from outside of the family home, although the link is not yet proven.

To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely.

So using the same mattress from your older child seems safer than if it came from elsewhere.
