Cries in car seat in the evening.

Hi all,

Apart from the obvious solution which is to not take my baby out and stay at home, have any of you found yourself in the same situation and what helped?

My baby is six and a half months and over the last couple of months, we've noticed that she cries and screams the whole car journey when we travel in the evening to go home from anywhere. She used to be so good and would fall asleep. We don't have any problems during the day.

I'm so anxious to take her anywhere now because we would have to travel home in the evening and our journeys to my in-laws are about an hour. We try to make sure she is asleep but usually she wakes up as soon as she's in the car seat. Did anything help?

Thank you.

I'm sorry you and your baby are going through this but you might want to ask MN to move this thread to the Parenting site where you will get support and advice from other parents. You can do this by "reporting" yourself.

The Night Watch is a different kind of board altogether.

It is street lights in her eyes? Maybe put something across the window to block out?

Is the car seat cold, that might wake her up. Is she properly winded, the angle of the seat can make trapped wind painful. Then agree with PP about street lights in her eyes

Does she have a light in the back of the car? Could be she just doesn't like the dark. My son isn't a fan of the dark on car journeys either!

Its most likely the glare from the lights making sleep very difficult

gaffamate · 31/01/2020 20:55

Our dd did this and our 5 month Ds also has tendency to cry more. We think it's because hes often got more wind so a good run on the back can help.

He also still feeds more often in the evenings so we can hit a time when hes wanting a feed every 30 mins and we haven't realised

He also gets tired and uses his thumb to self soothe but in the car seat he can't reach it properly as his shoulders are clamped down with the straps.

I can't remember when my DD stopped doing it but she did and suddenly driving wasn't so horrific

If you have a mirror installed for her, try removing it for these journeys as I think it makes the glare from headlights hard to escape.

Trying feeding immediately before the journey (as long as reflux etc. isn't an issue).

My other thought is that if you're putting her down to sleep before the journey and then expecting her to transfer asleep into the car seat that this is unrealistic and she may be better having a ten minute opportunity to have a wriggle and then a feed.

I would say persevere. I went through similar with DD and we came out the other side and she is now a really good traveler.
