Tell me about your easy to prep finger foods!

Baby is nearly 9 months and has been eating a mixture of purée (now lumpier ones) and then the odd finger food like toast fingers, cucumber, fruits etc. but while she has a great pincer grip (she can spot a crumb or speck of dirt off the floor a mile off and tries to eat it when she’s crawling around!) she seems a bit confused by some finger foods I try her with. I’m perhaps not being consistent enough but think she’s ready to do a little less purée and more eating on her own!

So if anyone has any easy to prepare ideas for fingers foods (we are veggie) then I’d be very grateful as I’ve tried searching and it seems a minefield of stuff that seems very faffy to prepare!

Dd used to live a corn on the cob cut into inch thick slices. That would keep her busy for ages

At that age I just left the salt out of my cooking and gave DC what we were having. We added salt to ours after serving theirs to cool.

We made DS sandwiches then cut them into fun shapes with a kids' cookie cutter set we got from eBay.

Pieces of cheese, pasta, veg like peas or sweet corn that are already small, cut up other cooked veg, fruit, crackers, Cheerios or other cereals, scrambled egg or omlette, pancakes, rice if it’s more sticky.

Pretty much anything that you would eat, she can eat with some modifications.

Cheddars and breadsticks are good! Cheerios are higher in sugar but always a winner. Have you tried steaming some veg, e.g. carrots or green beans? She might like the softer texture if she's not impressed by raw. I have a friend whose DS loves celery. I did make some of the BLW weaning muffins and things, but you are right - they are lots of faff!

DS didn't really show too much interest in feeding himself until 14 months when he clicked with the spoon. Just keep offering some finger foods with every meal and maybe she'll get the hang of it.

Yep, by 9mo DD was eating same meals as us. I just cook them without salt and then add salt to ours if we want to, but we've actually been eating a lot less salt in general because of it.

Pasta is good - my DD can easily handle fusilli and spaghetti, so macaroni cheese, spaghetti bolognaise, tuna pasta, etc. Little sandwich squares or wraps for lunch. Veg sticks. Fishfingers and peas. Roast chicken and veg.

Asda have got a good range of plant-based stuff, some of which is really low salt. My DD loves the cauliflower popcorn and the vegetable fingers.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 28/01/2020 21:28

He tends to have what we're having, more bland and alot smaller 😂
So today he had:
B - half weetabix
L - quarter jam sandwich, a couple of wotsits, apple slices, cucumber slices and tomato chunks
D - tuna pasta bake

He doesn't eat it all just picks and chooses what he puts in his mouth.

If your looking for sticks to give her try carrot sticks and bell pepper slices along side breadsticks as noted above. Also broccoli is always fun.

Any veg or fruit, cut to to finger size and microwave to soften it a bit. Peel if need be.

Works with carrot, broccoli, celery, etc

DS is almost 9 mo and has basically everything we have, less salt and hard bits.

corduroyal · 28/01/2020 22:18

You could also try pasta, and dd loves ice lollies so we've had loads of use out of a baby lolly mould set - make your own with whizzed up fruit.

Lunafortheloveogod · 28/01/2020 22:21

Just adding to all the suggestions above..

We make scrambled egg in the microwave but miss the stir before the last 30seconds so it makes almost a scrambled egg circle in a mug, I cut that into cubes or strips more manageable than the egg crumbs... which ds inevitably spends longer searching for.
