Anybody about to embark on potty training?

Going to take the plunge tomorrow, and thought it might be good to start a new thread for others also starting, for a bit of moral support.

Would rather wait a bit longer, but have baby 2 due in 5 weeks and am feeling I'd rather try now and avoid a) 2 sets of nappies to change and b) having to try at the same time as having young baby to cope with. I'm aware that she may well regress, but it's a risk I'm prepared to take.

DD is 2.4, and seems to have all the signs - wants changing everytime she has done a wee/poo, tells me before she needs to go, and is going in a potty at certain times (every night before bath and we have a bit of no nappy time in the morning).

Have my sticker chart ready. Agggghhhh

We are going to give it a go too!
DD2 is 2.5 exactly as of today, and we had a little chat yesterday about the possibility of using the knickers and potty, and for once she didn't shout "NO!" so here goes

Good luck; I'll let you know how we get on

estobi1 · 01/09/2007 06:59

Go for it - I dreaded the thought and it was fine and went surprisingly well. I was amazed at how quickly my dd mastered it and I have saved a fortune on nappies.

the best advice is just lots of praise and encouragement and I am sure they will get the hang of it in no time!

Potty seat that you can then transfer and attach to the toilet is a good one. My dd was apprehensive about the big hole in the toilet so a little travel seat (sold by blooming marvellous or as in my case, ebay!) that you put on the toilet seat and can fit easily into your bag is great. Also a pad for your car seat for when you feel brave enough for a short journey in the car.

Make sure you have lots of knickers ready. Good luck xx

Right - have started. Refused to take overnight nappy off. So left it, walked out of the room, and came back to find she had taken off herself.

Has already sat on potty twice to have a go, but nothing yet. She's loving th sticker chart.

Haven't yet got her dressed, so let's see how this goes. Up to now she hasn't wanted to wear knickers. In fact a massive 'NO' every time I suggest she puts them on (even over her nappy).

Sazisi, do let me know how it goes. Nice to have somebody there along with me

esto - got bathroom done recently and (stupidly) opted for a square toilet. Haven't yet found a square kids seat to go over. Not sure that they exist. Doh

Hi, I started a couple of days ago, so although I had a head start I'll join you on this thread

DS is 3 (shame on me!) and has always been adamant that he won't entertain potty/loo but hallelujah, he's taking to it now.

Still in nappies at night, first couple of days he had quite a few accidents, but yesterday only one

7 (yes, 7) wees in the potty/on the loo (I have a kids loo seat on top of mine - £4.99 from a cheap shop!)

The accident wee - I'd gone upstairs to the loo and when I got downstairs, there was a small puddle on the floor, a big wee in teh loo and DS dressed in his pants, inside out and wet, but hey he'd tried

We went for 2 x 30 min walks yesterday too, in pants, with no accidents woo hoo!

MamaG · 01/09/2007 10:04

(and I'm sure you're absolutely fascinated by my DS's pee habits)

orangecat · 01/09/2007 10:07

Funnily enough I am I am actually planning to go out with DD this afternoon. Not one for staying in, although I realise perhaps not the best idea on day 1 of potty training...

Will take potty and shed loads of changes of clothes with me

We have wooden floors throughout ground floor, so should help with accidents. And the carpet upstairs in being replaced in a few weeks so, hopefully, perfect timing

No, I hate staying in too. Good luck!

DCsnatchsunhill · 01/09/2007 10:46

Please may I have just a little boast....
Began potty training last Wednesday. NOT ONE ACCIDENT SINCE!! Hurrah!! (also dry nightime nappy, with one night him calling for the potty)
I took DS on 50 min bus ride today, with the potty in a carrier bag. He asked to use it three times whilst shopping (once in the middle of Lincraft ) and I simply disposed of said contents.
DS is three in October and had REFUSED to try potty training right up until last week.
Boast over...

Congratulations

I don't know how in the name of GOd this happened but my ds 22months, has trained himself practically. left his nappy off one hot day last week, he used the pot and has done ever since. goes himself if no pants on. have no idea how this happened, its never happened before wiht others. few accidents usually when i'm not paying attention, cos he can't really say anything so just shouts mama at me when he wants a wee.

arewenearlythereyet · 01/09/2007 11:11

sorry just realised how bloody smug I sound. have had nightmares training the others

orangecat · 01/09/2007 19:20

Well, successful day, I guess. To be honest, didn't really feel like we were properly training. Did 3 x wees in potty, and 1 accident while we were out. Has oviously been needing a poo this pm, and tried to sit on potty a couple of times, but no joy.

She seems to totally get weeing on potty at home, but poo and using toilets/ potty when out are going to be the big challenge.

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

How did you both get on sazisi and mamag?

Hi there,
DH has gone to Israel for 4 days and I've decided to start potty training DS (2.6) today. it's a little late, but we've had a relocation abroad and he's recently moved to a bed so didn't want to completely traumatise him with changes!
This morning - weed through 3 pairs of pants (given up on those now and he's naked waist down) and 8 wees in 3 hours. Is this normal??? I'm stumbling blindly through the process (book I have for toddlers is rubbish).
On the good side, he had his first poo in a potty this morning. I was so proud I nearly cried!
Can I join this thread as I feel a little lonely here in Germany, with DH away while I'm tackling this!
x

Hi there cheechy

While my DD seems to have fared better than your DS, I hear that it is completely normal to sometimes go through 8 changes of clothes in a day!

Today has been quite good too. I still feel that DD isn't getting it - i'm expecting her to tell me when she needs a wee, but i guess that bit comes in time. No accidents today, and she successfully did wees in potty about 6 times. She seems totally at ease with it while at home - just takes herself off to her potty when she needs to. Won't wee while out, though. Although she's obviously capable of holding on until she gets home!

At least your DS has got the hang of pooing in the potty. DD is waiting until she has her nighttime one on to 'produce'.

I'm sort of stumbling along too. I think there are loads of threads, but haven't got round to searching. One thing I do have, though, is a sticker chart, which DD really seems to be enjoying. Might help you too?

DD off to nursery tomorrow - with LOADS of spare clothes. Not confident she will fare better than at home, but let's see.

Will update again tomorrow
