Hi my DD 11 months has over the last couple of weeks developed nappy rash. She was org in tots bots with fleece liner and Iwas trying in disp for while to see if this cleared it up.
However it is now worse and has started bleeding. going to put her back in reusables but what can I do in mean time.
Have appointment at gp later but looking for tried and tested natural remadies too. I'm changing regulary anf would leave off but she's clawing at it when I leave nappy off

Oh I feel for her... poor thing! I have heard raw egg whites, beaten up, and placed on sore area works, although must admit never needed to try it myself! Apparently it provides a barrier and starts to clear rash up!

Bicarb in the bath? fresh air or you can use a cream called Metanium which is fab & cleared up my kids in no time.

HenriettaHippo · 31/08/2007 14:57

ouch. Have to say I've found cotton nappies much better for disposables for nappy rash, as they let in more air and don't keep the bottom so hot.

DS1 once had really nasty nappy rash, and the doctor prescribed caneston. It cleared up pretty fast.

I feel terrible as she's normally in cloth but when it started thought was making worse.
My DS never had anything like this.
Will try those tips thanks. egg with sounds good nice and gentle.

Just googled herbal remedies and found this link...

www.whatreallyworks.co.uk/start/kidszone.asp?article_ID=167

It talks about floral waters, like lavender

Metanium.... brilliant! Helped with my DS!

Miaou · 31/08/2007 15:11

Ds1 gets really bad nappy rash (whatever he is wearing). In the past I've found that metanium does the job! However his poor bottom is now covered in molluscum which keep getting infected so I have to apply fucidin at every change.

Deffo worth getting the doc to have a look though - depending on what's causing it they will give different meds/creams.

Just a thought but my DD 11months had really bad nappy rash that just wouldn't go away & it also started to bleed in places(she wears mother ease nappies). Lots of people suggested different creams etc but after getting really worried I took her to the docs & turned out to be thrush. I can't remember the name of the cream he perscribed but it cleared up over a week & hasn't returned since.

BalletMum · 01/09/2007 09:26

The cream is Canestan and you can buy it over the counter but you have to buy the one for Athletes foot for babies as the adult thrush one is too strong.

I posted about this a while back, and got lots of suggestions.

The combinatuion of factors that cleared up my ds's rash were:

Bathed in chamomile tea while changing. Someone also suggested soaking a slik liner in it, if you have one.

Porridge oats, wrapped in a muslin in the bath. They make the water feel really soft and sor tof creamy - lovely!! It's very soothing.

I used Metanium too, and found it to be fantastic. i used it with a layer of sudocrem over the top to act as a barrier, as Metanium is not that thick, but it works better than anything else I tried.

Nappy off time if great too, if messy(!) esp. if the rash is bleeding or oozy nad creams won't stick to it. An hour of fresh air out in the garden, or indoors if you can face it - makes all the difference.

I did all these things at once, so couldn't say which one actually healed the nappy rash, (probably Metanium had the greatest effect)but as a combination it did the trick within 2-3 days.

I can never find Metanium in Boots, but have got it in several smaller chemists.

HTH

That's a SILK liner. Apologies for my other typo's - too many to mention here..........

Babyramone · 01/09/2007 10:30

Thanks everyone some great advice there. Just noticed DD's 3rs tooth pooped through last night and she's only just got her bottom two. (teething never affected ds)so wonder if that's caused rash.
Took her to gp and it's very swollen so have been given Canasten with hydrocortazone to use for 3-5 days.
Have bought some metanium to and will try the silk liners and camomile.

sure it will clear up with all that. My DS1 always had horrific nappy rash with teeth, bleeding and raw patches. DS2 seems not to get it, but he's in cloth.... DS1 was in disposables, and I wonder if it makes a difference.

Babyramone · 04/09/2007 22:55

Just wanted to let you all know that DD's nappy rash is all better. Used the canasten for 3 days and by day 3 was almost completetly gone. Am using Metanium to help clear it completely and will use Bepanthen as a barrier.
She's now much happier and I've also been using camomile for wiping.
Going to try the egg white if reoccurs.
