Hello, I'm just after some more information on cloth nappies and nappy libraries. I'm due my first in June.

I've had a quick look online and my nearest library is an hour away with no postal service Confused and the website isn't really clear how it all works. I'm not on FB so can't access their pages. I'm wondering if it is worth the trip or if anyone had tips, what to look for advice on here.

I'm also wondering if i should go for disposable nappies for the first month or so to get into the swing of things or if I should go straight to cloth nappies?

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Nappy library volunteer here.

We suggest getting into the swing of things with a new baby first - feeding and the like before thinking too much about a hire.
Not all operate the same way. We meet monthly. people come along, have a chat about them, find out different types, how they work etc, washing instructions, we answer questions and coo over the baby, hire out the kit for £10, fill in forms, give you an info booklet and wave you off til you return a month later to return Grin
We are however happy to ansswer questions in the meantime, which we do over FB, email or WhatsApp.

@Namechangeymcnamechange11 that's amazing advice thank you. Only £10 that's a bargain to trial! Do they lend you a variety of nappies in the starter packs or is it one type each month and see how you get on with them?

Also what's the process regarding cleaning/hygiene etc. Obviously I'm hoping nobody brings them back dirty but are they re-washed or anything at the library?

Yes, we put in a variety into each pack - poppers, velcro, different brands, different boosters, AIOS/2 parters/pockets etc.

Yes we re wash on return. My washing machine is always on the go 🙄

You can also fill in The Nappy Lady Questionnaire and you will get a reply back advising you what sort of nappy system will suit you..
We are in cloth nappies for 5 months now and it's fab..

Hi! Congratulations on your pregnancy. And it’s great that you’re looking into reusables/modern cloth nappies.
Shame that your nearest cloth nappy library is so far away.
I also recommend the Nappy Lady Questionnaire as an awesome place to start. My recommendations have been absolutely perfect for us. And I did also try out about 5/6 other brands/types which haven’t suited us as well. I chose not to cloth from newborn, but started out with cheeky wipes. Then jumped in with two feet from about 3 months. One of the most unexpected perks was that cloth nappies contain about 99% off poonamis.
TNL also do trial kits, but off the top of my head think that a lot of their newborn ones get booked up 6+months in advance (think their wizard uno one is almost “pee on a stick book the kit” level booked up. They do however have a large variety of trial kits on offer and do a great purchase option bringing your trial price right down.

Also below is a link for council incentives for cloth nappies incase you hadn’t found your local information.

Good luck and hope your parenthood journey (and cloth nappy one) go super well. I know you said you’re not on social media. I did find the TNL parenting group super helpful for advice and support.

Thanks for the advice everyone. My mind is pretty set on cloth nappies mainly to reduce plastic in the house. If all goes well I may see if I can start a cloth nappy service in the area, I can't be the only one within an hour to want the service.

Unfortunately it looks like my council don't do any incentives either. You would expect from the town near where I live which is pretty a deprived area with lots of younger mums would offer more. But apparently not Sad.
