Are cot bumpers safe?

For 13 month old in a new cot with a solid wooden headboard little man insists on rocking himself to sleep by banging his head against the top!

Absolutely not

Definitely not

I used the ones from ikea which don't have an edge, it has a base that the mattress sits in, and the bumpers are basically just slightly higher edges than the mattress.

Lullaby trust doesn't recommend them, you just have to weigh up whether you are happy to use them or not.

ArchMemory · 23/01/2020 21:54

I’m sorry your son bangs his head and I can imagine that’s upsetting but as far as I am aware cot bumpers are not a good idea. At 13 months probably low risk (ok for pillows and duvets from 12 months I believe) but why take the chance.

Ploppymoodypants · 23/01/2020 21:54

Nope.
My 14 month old does this too. No stopping her. They will outgrow it I am sure. It obviously doesn’t hurt them.

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2020 21:59

I used them in my DC's cot over 25 years ago because there was no advice to the contrary back then. Or at least I wasn't aware that there was.

Would I use them now? Absolutely not. They are just too risky.

LutherRalph1 · 23/01/2020 22:05

No

Read Justice for Preston

Lana1234 · 23/01/2020 22:07

I bought one about a year ago when I was in the same boat as you pretty much with a headbanging DS then after reading about how unsafe they were and the actual deaths that have occurred because of them I threw it out immediately. Just not even worth the risk and DS grew out of headbanging (took to just booting the hell out the cot instead)

Megan2018 · 23/01/2020 22:08

No way, should be bloody banned. Hideous things. Headbanging is very normal www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/babies-and-head-banging-what-parents-need-know

doritosdip · 23/01/2020 22:24

Not safe at all.

Agree with the advice to try a pillow which is ok from 12months

MillieMoodle · 23/01/2020 22:39

No!

We used them for DS1 when he was 12 months plus but that was going back 8/9 years. Have since read some very tragic stories about them and didn't use them at all for DS2. When I got rid of our baby bedding I couldn't even put the bumpers in the charity bag as I was worried someone else would use them. I cut the ties off and gave them to a friend who runs a small animal shelter to use as bedding for poorly animals.

newbingepisodes · 23/01/2020 22:50

No! We used a swimming noodle under the sheet to stop ending up banging head on head board.

3luckystars · 23/01/2020 22:53

No they are not safe and I think someone just invented them for decoration.

Ivysaurus · 23/01/2020 23:00

No, google Justice for Preston

cousinboneless · 23/01/2020 23:07

No. Not worth the risk.

Cait73 · 24/01/2020 08:39

I thought this may be the case, I won't get one don't worry

He's used to a soft sided cot which gave way to his rocking 🤣

We had the same problem so use a couple of towels rolled into a sausage and then wrapped in a sheet, at the end of the cot. Equivalent of a pillow but just a bit higher and firmer.

BumboBaggins · 24/01/2020 14:06

Baby is 18 months btw

thunderthighsohwoe · 25/01/2020 20:42

Ours does this, and is a very gymnastic sleeper. Being in a toddler Sleepyhead helps enormously. I know these are controversial too, but I’m happier with that than ties etc on a bumper.
