Baby Carriers: Babybjörn vs Ergobaby

Hi there,

Wondered if anyone had any experience using the Ergobaby Omni 360 or Babybjörn One Carrier (new versions, not older models) and whether one is more comfortable than the other with a newborn for walks?

We live in the middle of nowhere and mother in law is wanting to buy us a gift so we thought this would be a good shout. Unfortunately no option to try them out in person so I'd love to hear feedback from you guys!

Thank you!

Ergobaby without a doubt. Much more comfy and longer lasting. We used ours every day for the first year and still use it sometimes at 21 months, and he’s 90th centile. Everyone I know with a baby bjorn swapped to an ergobaby.

My dp carried my 5.6 yr old dd in our ergo carrier many years ago. They really do have longevity!

Ergobaby!!! Or beco Gemini, I have both and they’re great.

IamPickleRick · 23/01/2020 19:42

Ergobaby all day long

ColaFreezePop · 23/01/2020 19:42

Neither. Use a wrap.

Once they get to 3-4 months then a carrier is easier to use.

KindKylie · 23/01/2020 19:43

Ergobaby or another brand of Soft Structured Carrier ie Tula or Rose & Rebellion.

Do you have a sling library near you? Worth hiring before you commit.

RicStar · 23/01/2020 19:43

I had both and preferred the baby Bjorn- they are pretty similar now so I would just go with the cheaper / colour you prefer.

Sewingbea · 23/01/2020 19:44

Caboo wrap for the first couple of months then an ergo. Worth every penny.

stopbeingadinosaur · 23/01/2020 19:47

Ergobaby definitely. The Sling Thing website lets you try before you buy, so you can use it for like 2 weeks (I think) and return it if you don't like it.

I have the Babybjorn air one mesh. We've used it since by baby was tiny and still use it now he's 15 months old despite him being huge. However, I have been told that the ergobaby is better and more comfortable, and wish I'd got thst instead although I have been happy with the Baby Bjorn. It's tricky to give an answer when i haven't tried both. Hopefully someone will turn up soon who has tried both carriers! I've had back trouble and have managed with the Baby Bjorn but struggled a bit with long walks as he's got heavier (he's 91st percentile weight and 98th percentile height so massive baby). I have been told the ergobaby is better for back issues.

The two sling consultants I spoke to and also John Lewis baby department sales assistant all steered me away from the Baby Bjorn. They said it’s very easy for the parent to use but doesn’t hold the baby in the optimal position (Spine curved in a natural C shape). I have an Ergobaby Omni 360 and thought it was great. Easy to use and very supportive.

BigRedBoat · 23/01/2020 19:52

Not tried the ergo but I really like the babybjorn one, I think some posters might see 'babybjorn' and assume it's a narrow base 'crotch dangler' but the babybjorn one is different to their old style ones.

RicStar · 23/01/2020 19:55

Yes as @BigRedBoat says the carry is now pretty much identical. I found the baby Bjorn easier to get in and off but I doubt there is much in it.

surreygirl1987 · 23/01/2020 20:27

Yes, I've been told that BB position is fine My son sees a physio as he was born with torticollis and hypermobility and I bought his Baby Bjorn in to ask her if it was okay. She looked at his positioning in the carrier and said it was perfect. I'd definitely trust a physio over a John Lewis employee!

That said, I'd still probably have chosen ergo if I could rewind. I like the soft fabrics more for a newborn. The BB has lasted us 15 months and still going though so I guess neither are that bad!

Is there a slings library near you where you can try them both out? Mine has a massive selection of carriers and wraps etc that you can rent for a week for quite cheap.

Blondebear123 · 23/01/2020 20:33

I've got baby bjorn. Still use it with my 2.5year old on my back when at the airport.

Since2016 · 23/01/2020 20:33

Neither.

Wrap. Then sling library to see what works for baby once bigger. I use an Integra for no2 currently almost 1 and V large with no issue. Used a connecta for no1 and carried up to 2.5 (pregnant and vomming). Baby 1 was 9.11 so not small!

Honestly I know it may be daunting but try a library. I know of almost no one who can manage with a ‘high street’ carrier after 9 months.

DappledThings · 23/01/2020 21:12

Never seen a child in a Baby Bjorn who didn't look too low down, unsupported or otherwise uncomfortable. Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole myself.

I have a Beco Gemini which a PP mentioned. Have used it with 2 DC and up to about 3.5 years of age. It's a brilliant carrier.

Stroller15 · 23/01/2020 21:15

Wrap first then ergobaby once baby is bigger.

isitcrazyzzz · 09/03/2020 21:29

I got a Ergo Original and found it uncomfortable. My back was always hurting after carrying a 6-7 months old for an hour (it actually stiffed up).

I bought a Ergo Omni. Returned it the second day. It felt bulky and unsecured. Baby hated it in there.

Did lots of research, found Beco might well fit my frame (slim and narrow shoulder). Went to the sling library. The lady got a brand new Beco 8 for me. Fell in love with it at sight. Tried it on - It made so much more sense! Bought one straightaway. Love it with a 9 months in there.
It's much lighter than Ergo Omni but still quite strong. Simple to put on - I use cross-shoulder straps. Baby feels a lot more comfortable too and my back has not hurt since I started using it. Haven't tried for long journey yet, as it's winter. Looking forward to going out with it once it gets a bit warmer so baby could see from higher and find more interesting things when being out.
