I think my baby is cold at night

Hi all,

I just wanted to get some thoughts. My 7mo baby is going to bed in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag. Our thermostat is set to 18 but our house is fairly old and our windows draughty. When I get up in the night to feed him I wrap up and can't wait to get back under my duvet. I'm worried that my baby is getting cold. Does anyone else think that their babies little arms should be covered more than with just two thin layers of clothing? I just want to drape a blanket over him (though would obviously never do this!)

When you say “obviously youd never put a blanket on him”, are blankets not even allowed in the UK now. My kids both hated sleeping bags and both had light quilts and a heater in their room.

Yes blankets are fine under UK advice. It's the US that has the thing against blankets.

She means that blankets arent recommended when using a grobag. They are for using instead of blankets

I can also recommend the JoJo Maman Bébé sleeved sleeping bags. I have a couple from there in 2.5 and 3.5 tog and my baby sleeps without issue in our very old and cold house. His thermometer shows14/15 degrees in his room the last couple of months. I've checked his body temperature throughout the night initially and he felt warm enough whilst in the sleeping bag.

Although reading through how high some of you set your thermostats, I feel a little stingy. I set ours to 14 during the day (it's located in a draughty hallway) but the house warms up to about 16 degrees at that setting. It's warm enough for us so long as your arms are covered.

According to who? I agree that grobags are designed to be used in place of blankets, but I've never seen anything that states you can't/shouldn't put one over the top, as long as you follow the other advice about layers, feet to foot, under baby's armpits etc.

TwoPointFourKidsAndADog · 22/01/2020 22:25

Sounds like mine was at that age, though he was born early so we were still counting back for that. I was aware the best way to check their actual temperature is to feel their stomach, if that’s cold they’re cold. If it’s warm they’re okay. It was true with my baby and it helped to know this tip.

You hear people say to feel the back of the neck too, but I found stomach more reliable.

It says so on the label of every grobag that you should never use a blanket with one.

BertieBotts · 23/01/2020 07:47

Ah OK, I've never had a branded one.

Mumbassa · 23/01/2020 07:56

I agree with using a gro clock

Our heating comes on twice through the night to keep the temp at 19/20 in DS room. He wears a sleeveless vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. We have a Gro egg in there.

we got a gas filled electric radiator and set it to a constant temp in dds room. hers is the coldest as above the garage.
