Potential move to Newcastle with work. We don’t know the area. Anyone any thoughts/insights into the new builds in Newcastle Great Park development & any idea how easy to get to city centre from there on public transport- thanks Smile

Try joining the Facebook group slings and parenting north east and asking on there. Collectively they know everything.

Can I ask why great north park?

Thanks - great park so far purely based on rightmove searches! We’re just starting our research.....

The coast is also very popular. Last week’s Kirsty and Phil’s love it or list it was set at the coast.

There's a great park residents group on Facebook, in amongst the lost cats post you'll find some useful info. One thing I'd say is watch out for the service charges and avoid persimmon as everyone complains about them.
There's only the Q3 bus from great park which gets busy morning and evening but you're a 15/20 min walk to great north road that has buses running every few mins. Road links are good but at the mo only one entry/exit to the estate (a new road is in the early stages which will give another entry/exit) so traffic can on occasion be crazy. The great park itself is massive and still expanding, there are no shops on the estate but a large 24hr asda and Tesco are a 15 min drive away.
The schools are excellent, the one on great park is heavily subscribed but a second one is moving at some point. I think a new middle/high school is opening too.

Where will work be based?

I'd look at Warkworth woods, Melton Park, Brunton Park and melbury - WW and Melbury are the first phases of great park and are adopted by the council, so no service charge - but obvs no help to buy either.
If it's new developments you're looking for there's five mile park, north Gosforth park, moorfields and another yet to be named development all within 10 mins of great park.
Morpeth is nice and fairly close to the A1 for town - a good 25/30 mins from the city centre. Jesmond is nice and the rest of Gosforth is nice. Jesmond is within walking distance of town, lots of bars, shops and restaurants but quite studenty. Gosforth is similar with fewer students and slightly further out.
The coast is lovely and also close to the a1058 for town too.

You'd be better in Gosforth or jesmond than great park. Better public transport links and actual amenities. I wouldn't hold my breath about the (long) promised shops and the planning application for a new part of the Gosforth academy empire up there was rejected on environmental grounds. The Gosforth school system (which the great park first school feeds into) is absolutely full at the moment.

If you move to great park, you can walk to the metro if you live on the Kingston park side. But you'd find it much easier from Gosforth. Just be aware that estate agents will market literally anything north of jesmond as 'gosforth'.

You can get the metro into town from the coast easily. Lots of the people o know who live in Whitley bay love it there.

If I was moving to Newcastle for work I would live in Whitley Bay or Tynemouth if I could afford it.

It takes at least 1 hour 15 mins to get from Morpeth to Edinburgh by train. And lots of the trains are slower than that.

MsFrog · 22/01/2020 13:58

I live in Tynemouth on the coast of Newcastle. I'd definitely second considering the coast, it's easy to get into town and there's plenty to do around here as well. The coast is beautiful. It is brilliant up here, you'll absolutely love it 😊

MsFrog · 22/01/2020 14:03

Just re-read your post - if you are home based, it will be lovely for you at the coast, lot's going on (bars, cafes, shops, gym/classes/pools/exercise groups, walks/cycling), it's scenic, and easy to get around with or without a car. I can't recommend it enough round here, as you can probably tell!

(Also, in my post above, when I said easy to get into town, I meant Newcastle city centre, in case that wasn't obvious!)

I feeling a lot more comfortable about the prospect of moving now having read these positive posts! Hmmmmm lots to consider!

I lived in Newcastle for 2 years in my early 20's would move back up there tomorrow you gave me the money. Absolutely loved every single thing about the place.

I lived other side of the water though. 1st in Prudhoe which is a actually Northumberland... Was lovely but bit of a commute on the the bus. Then moved further in to a place called Ryton and was settled there. Get more for your money out that way too ☺️
