Cloth nappies - can anyone explain...well...everything to me?

I have got some cloth nappy sets from the aldi baby event (mia bambino?). Plastic covers, cotton inserts you fold into thirds (i think) and disposable liners you put over the cotton inserts to dispose of poos (again, i think? These would have to go in a nappy bag and bin as we are on a sceptic tank and cannot flush things). There are a couple of “uno” nappies that appear to have the insert attached so you just have to put them on (with a liner) like a disposable. I also have a lidded bucket for storage pre-washing.

Can anyone experienced with this tell me:

  1. i have seen online that some brands also have cloth nappies the same shape as the plastic covers that go inside the covers - are these instead of the flat inserts? As well as? Should i get these too?

  2. with the cotton folded up it is quite bulky - i’m not sure the plastic cover would prevent a poonami escaping - do you just put up with leaks? Or are mine poorly fitting?

  3. the one-part “uno” nappies seem more convenient. Is this because they are less effective?

  4. is there anything else i’m missing, or any handy tricks i should know?

Thank you!

Is there a nappy library/demo you can go to?

The Nappy Lady on youtube is really helpful

  1. the cloth nappy that goes inside the wrap is the absorbent part and the wrap is the waterproof bit. You can put 'boosters or inserts between the nappy and wrap for extra absorbency for night time or heavy wetters. The all in one nappies often have inserts that you can swap or double up etc to increase absorbency. The all in one are not usually as absorbent but are simpler to use. We use all in one day time and 2 part night time with booster.
  1. No you don't put up with leaks. Something is wrong if your getting them. YouTube is great for fit videos.
  1. as above 1 part are less absorbent than 2 part but more absorbent than a disposable
  1. the nappy lady is a great source of information. We use fleece liners rather than disposable ones as they keep babies bum drier. Even though they don't really take effect until baby does more solid poo we use them regardless. Also "flushable" liners aren't usually actually flushable so always bin if using them

  1. I would also recommend reuseable wipes if you don't already use them. Can be washed with nappies and saves £££ in the long run

The Nappy Lady website should explain most things! Smile
