Hi, My sister is due her first child in November. We have heard of a book by Gina Ford? to help with sleeping and routine. We wondered if anyone could recommend it or any others. Thanks

I found a book called "What to Expect During the First year" quite helpful - just don't panic if your baby doesn't reach the milestones listed each month. Lots of detail and easy to use index make it useful as a general reference book.

Could I recommend this one for her DH?

Thank you all - will pass these onto her and her hubby.
Any other suggestions welcomed!

There are lots of different ways to raise a baby. Gina Ford's philosophy is just one of many (and has its critics).

May I suggest your sis goes to a public library? Plenty of babycare/parenting books to browse from there, think about different ways to go.

Libby Purves' How Not To Be A Perfect Mother is a lot more use, IMO.
The NCT 'Your Birth Year' book is pretty good too.
TBH I found the 'what to expect' books utter rubbish - far too American and opinionated and the edition I had contained some dangerous and outdated advice.

I reccomend she go to a library and borrow loads before you or she spends any money.

I quite like a book called "baby calming". its not telling you what to do but does contain a lot of info on what some parents have found works for their kids.
"What to expect" was sort of entertaining to look at at the end of a month and go- oh yes hes doing that , not doing that yet etc.

Agree with MrsB, loved the L Purves book, really disliked the What not to Expect book, sold mine on ebay! Also agree she has a look in a library first...
