Tongue tie. Should I cut?

My son is almost 5 weeks old. Due to mix ups with the referrals he has his assessment and a date to cut this week. I’m breastfeeding and he has a shallow latch that hurts. I’m using nipple shields and that usually helps with the pain. I’ve not had any infections and he is healthy and gaining weight. I was also thinking to stop breastfeeding once he was 6 weeks old so my husband could help more. I think I would continue if it didn’t hurt as much but I’m also not too concerned (for lack of a better word) about whether I bottle or breastfeed as long as he is healthy. My question is should I get it cut? Should I leave it? How much does it hurt them? Is it worth doing? I just want to hear other peoples experiences with tongue ties.

DS1's tie went undiagnosed until he was 6 years old. Do a search of my old posts, it's a very long story! His tongue tie and the associated high palate caused a whole lot of issues and I really wish that I had known about it when he was a baby

We went to his appointment today. We have been booked in for next Friday. He will be 6 weeks old, I’m still quite worried about causing him such pain

I would do it. Leaving it could cause minor speech issues too.

He will honestly be fine.

Yes!! Did not cause my baby any pain at all and he is now happy, healthy baby. If he hadn't he would probably be on formula by now..
Tongue ties are awful for babies Sad it is so exhausting for them to drink, like an elastic band is pulling back their tongue!
Also they can lead to speech and lang problems sadly. Shame it's not prorotised.by NHS at the moment.

#jasmine491 I can tell you now they barely feel it and the younger the better - heel prick way more painful and everyone has that!

Fatas · 15/01/2020 20:17

They feel very little pain. What will you do for his 8 week injections which are worse?

Jasmine491 · 24/01/2020 21:57

He had it cut today. He was most upset about being taken out of his car seat. He didn’t cry at all during the very quick snip. I put him straight to the breast and he fed for a few minutes. There was some blood but not a lot. I think the thought of it was waaayyy worse than the procedure. Now to wait and see if there are any improvements.

Glad it went ok. Have you been given the massages to do to prevent reconnection?

thrree · 24/01/2020 23:55

I had my DC TT cut I think at about 8 weeks, not because it hurt whilst feeding but because she was quite sicky - not that it bothered them. I didn't notice any difference if I'm honest but ultimately do think it's worth it as if left apparently it could disrupt weaning and speech.

Jasmine491 · 25/01/2020 05:04

@Pinkflipflop85 They gave me some information on aftercare but nothing about massaging it. They did talk a lot about preventing infection. Perhaps the guidance has changed to reduce the risk of infection.

@thrree That’s what convinced me. The possibility of problems later in life then having to “re-learn” talking or eating after having it cut when he is older

@jasmine491 DC3 was cut a few weeks ago and they just said to make sure she was feeding regularly for the first few days to help prevent it reconnecting. I just stopped her from sleeping through the night the first night and it has been absolutely fine.

Pinkflipflop85 · 25/01/2020 09:05

My dd only had it done 2 weeks ago. We have a 6 week massage program to follow and for the first 7 days I had to make sure she fed every 3 hours.

MrsBobDylan · 25/01/2020 12:34

My ds has his tongue tie snipped and didn't even wake up!

I had a job to get it done and had to travel to a hospital quite far away but I'm always glad I had it done. It could have affected his ability to lick ice creams and french kiss, and other serious shit like that Shock

MrsBobDylan · 25/01/2020 12:36

Also, I have a nephew who had a tongue tie identified at birth and my brother and wife chose to leave it. His diction is bad and he is hard to understand - his words don't 'round off' properly and he is 7 now :(
