Can someone help /reassure me on sleep?!! By ds is almost 5 weeks old, he was born 4 weeks early. I mostly breastfeed, my husband gives one or 2 bottles of formula in the evening /night to give me a chance to sleep. We're doing shifts atm so both of us get some rest.

I got up at 1.30 for my shift and since 2am it's been change, feed, wind, repeat! He has gone down for periods in between but only about 1 hour stretches and for most of those he's been wriggling/grunting/farting... His eyes were shut so I think he was sort of asleep, but probably not properly sleeping?! I didn't get any proper sleep either, too noisy and was just waiting for him to go from little noises to crying! Which actually didn't happen! I picked him a couple of times and then he just slept in my arms until I put him down.. Then more wriggling! I tried the white noise as that sometimes works , but wasn't working this time ☹️ He doesn't seem to like being swaddled as he seems to prefer to be able to wriggle/kick around, but maybe I should try again to see if it makes him calmer?

Did/does anyone elses baby do this? He does do proper sleep sometimes, where he's spark out, so when he's 'sort of' asleep I'm a bit worried he's not getting enough proper rest, although he doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable or distressed?!

He's our first baby and is mostly pretty content, doesn't cry that much except for the standard reasons and can usually be soothed quite easily. He is feeding well and doing wet and dirty nappies. We're only in a very loose routine at this stage. I just worry about how little he seems to get a really settled sleep!

Totally normal (unfortunately).

Babies experience time at a different rate to us. We have 24 hour days, we can be awake for 16 hours, then an 8 hour sleep, and when we're awake we need to eat a certain amount. Babies can only be awake for about 3 hours at that age, then they need a couple of hours sleep, and in their awake time they still need to do all the things we do. It's just compressed.

Doesn't last forever (although I'm 2 years in and am still waiting on my DS sleeping through).

Yep, sounds totally normal to me! I couldn't believe how much a tiny baby could fart! I think at about 10 weeks ours started to have more of a proper settled sleep over night. In terms of the wind we did try a few things, such as colief, but nothing really helped. She just grew out of it.
