Projectile vomit/teething

Hi all,
My DD is 5 months old and has started teething, poor baby is in so much pain. She will not chew on any teether that we try tempt her with, the only thing she will chomp down on is fingers. Thursday we gave her calpol to help with the pain, ten minutes later she projectile vomited everywhere it was like something out of a horror film. Called 111 (FTM panic mode) and because she was back to her normal self afterwards with no temp and all the other bits they ask, they advised to keep an eye on her and take her to the doctors if it happened again. Anyway after hours of mumsnetting and googling, I had read that instead of calpol try ibuprofen (makes sense) so we have given her some tonight and it's happened again, projectile vomit everywhere. Is this a common thing? And please any tips at all that can just help soothe my little darling would be more than welcome! We have tried most of the usual suggestions so I am willing to try anything that could help her! Thank you Thanks

My DS was like this , first gave him calpol after injections and it made him so sick exactly like you say. Have you tried ambesol?

Also I used to freeze the teething rings that you're supposed to refrigerate and it gave him some temporary relief, teething is not fun , poor baby hope it passes for you both soon Thanks

No we haven't but ambesol is definitely on my to buy list! I've read it is good stuff!
Thank you so much it's awful isn't it Sad

I've not heard of it before OP. I'd personally go to the GPs to see what they suggest you use instead of calpol and ibuprofen in future.

I assume you've tried teething gel but what about granules? They work much better on my DS than the gel atleast.

My son vomits with every tooth cutting. Hes 9mo. Gave him brufen about 16 weeks old and he projectile vomited and had a red rash all over his body for a week. Hes ok with calpol. I've read sometimes using a different brand of paracetamol can stop the vomiting. Teething is horrendous. I've a 2yr old and 9mo and both teething. No fun whatsoever! Anbesol is great stuff but also recommend chamomillia 30c from health food shop. I crush them and give to 9mo and it settles him quite quickly.

Some babies can't tolerate sorbitol e420 which is in calpol. Perhaps the ibuprofen was too harsh on your LO's tummy? Was it given with food? Hope you find something that works. Anbesol liquid is fabulous stuff

Thank you so much for the replies, I haven't heard of the granulated stuff I'll try find some! I will be trying everything fingers crossed she gets some relief.

Please don't freeze the teethers, it can do a lot of damage to their gums. My wee one has various food allergies and this seems to include something he's reacting to in ordinary Calpol but other (cheaper) brands of baby paracetamol he is fine with so worth comparing ingredients. Hope your baby feels better soon, it's so hard seeing them like that isn't it.

We’re you syringing the calpol/ibruprofen in? Only ask as Dd has done this too. Rather spectacularly threw up pink all over my mums beige carpet pretty much immediately after being given calpol after her first lot of vaccinations.

I eventually worked out I’d maybe fired the calpol in too fast possibly getting her gag reflex. So now when we give her calpol we have to do it super slow.

Also second the teething granuals.

My DS was like this, however he did have reflux but it was always way way worse when teething (was mostly controlled by medication). It's apparently something to do with the excess saliva they produce when teething. Sometimes it was actually the only way I knew he was teething. Those teething granules would make him instantly projectile vomit too. Don't really have much advice but DS used to love chewing on a frozen flannel. And dentinox worked wonders for him too.
