First immunisations experience

Hello there!
I’m writing to see if anyone had similar experiences with their LOs following the first (should be 8 weeks) immunisations.
Ours have been a couple weeks late, due to our practice not out of choice. He had them yesterday morning.
We had the expected unhappiness at time of injections and also expected some fussiness and crying in the time after however we experienced an awful 24 hours in which following actual injections there was 7 hours of extreme screaming even creating some new screams we didn’t know were possible, a check over from a doctor as a result of this, possibly due to new Mam anxiety however were reassured DS was simply “pissed off” at what has happened.
24 hours later of little sleep from him and minimal feeding (breast in which I hoped would be a comfort but mostly refusing) we encountered diarrhoea and upset stomach making him highly irritable but not as screaming as yesterday.
My major concern is as young as he is he really does seem to understand we took him to do this and our normally smiley and chatty baby refuses to even make eye contact with us. We’ve had family round who have managed albeit small but smiles from him but he just screams when we try. At 10 weeks I figured babies wouldn’t possibly be able to connect these sort of things together but I’m adamant that he feels betrayed by us for making him feel this crap.
Has anyone else seemed to have a baby upset with them and please tell me it gets better.
I understand this sounds stupid, just looking for reassurance that he will be back to chatting and smiling at us.

Did he get the 3 doses of paracetamol that are advised after the MenB vaccine ?

dementedpixie · 09/01/2020 17:37

The diarrhoea could be from the rotavirus dose

Babies who have the vaccine can sometimes become restless and irritable, and some may develop milddiarrhoea

Yellowmellowgem · 09/01/2020 17:38

He did, we did one 10 minutes prior then the two after spaced out as recommended. He did get a slight temp but nothing to explain why he screamed so much Confused

No no No he cannot be aware enough to blame you for this, he doesnt yet have the reasoning ability. He may well have been unfortunate enough to get a bug at the same time. He will be better soon and all forgotten

Yellowmellowgem · 09/01/2020 17:41

Ah thank you! I did read that it’s possible! He does appear that all the lists of “potential side effects” he has decided he will take them all. It’s one of those I wish I could take it all for him.

The side effects for most of them mention being restless and irritable

Amrythings · 09/01/2020 17:43

He's probably not angry any more (mine absolutely hulked out when he had his first round and the nurse was in stitches), but he's probably got an awfully upset tummy from the rotavirus vaccine and you're getting the full sad panda because you don't have to make an effort for mum and dad.

Rotavirus vaccine is a total bastard but it IS better than getting it and it should pass really soon.

Yellowmellowgem · 09/01/2020 17:44

Thank you that is reassuring. I know my rational mind tells me it’s not possible but when he’s normally so responsive to me and his dad but refuses to even look my irrational mind tells me he is upset with us! What goes through the mind of mums eh

Sulking is a very good word in this instance! Thank you for replying this puts my mind at ease that he will once again love us Grin

Poor lamb. My elder daughter sailed through but my newbie sounds a bit like yours - new levels of screaming never heard before!
We're over 48hrs now and she's still really unsettled, fingers crossed tomorrow is better.

sewinginscotland · 09/01/2020 20:53

DS was awful for his first vaccines, he got a high temp, woke up every 45 minutes and cried a lot. This lasted a week...

The good news is that none of the others were as bad, if that's any reassurance.

Yellowmellowgem · 09/01/2020 21:59

Oh dear NearlyBaked I feel you! It’s so heartbreaking seeing them like that isn’t it.
DS has just started engaging with us again so fingers crossed! He still isn’t great but I’m starting to see the light

Sounds like my daughter at her 8 week jabs. She must've Googled the side effects list and picked them all. She somewhat 'forgave' us after 24 hours, and was pretty much back to normal after 48.

The 12 week jab was much better. Small amount of shouting at the time, but was her normal self within an hour.

We have the 16 week ones today at 18 weeks old (delayed due to Christmas and New Year family visits). Hopefully it won't be a repeat of the 8 week jabs.

Forgot to say that I hope your LO is feeling much better this morning. I think a bath really helped make DD feel a bit better in herself the following day.

Yellowmellowgem · 12/01/2020 17:20

He is champion again now thank you! A bit of a lost voice Confused which never occurred to me babies could get! But back to his smiling happy self at last x

I had a very similar experience!

Baby was 8 weeks and cried non stop the whole day. As soon as she'd settle it was like she had a flash back and would start screaming again. Worst day.
Just know we're doing to protect our babies in the long run.....not looking forward to the next set - baby is now 10weeks
